Index Based Investing

Wealth management

Selwyn Gerber writes: Probably the simplest, and certainly the wisest approach to this quandary is the “Core & Satellite” model of investing. The investor should identify what portion of his portfolio he can afford to lose and what portion is necessary for his long term financial survival. The “core” portion should be invested in long-term conservative strategies and the “Satellite” portion can be used for a group of more aggressive, shorter term and opportunistic investing, especially if the satellite elements are independent from and unrelated to the core and to each other.

Fundamental indexing

It goes without saying that the larger an investor’s core, the smaller the impact of the satellite portion of the portfolio. Divorced from the powerful allure of getting rich quick, any rational investor should be willing to embrace smaller investments in risky gambles in exchange for the peace of mind that a conservatively invested core safety net provides.

RVW Principle 6: Invest right. Then sleep tight ™
“There are two times when a man shouldn’t speculate: when he can’t afford it, and when he can.”
- Mark Twain, Following the Equator, Pudd’nhead Wilson’s New Calendar
The final, and perhaps most essential, principle of Rip Van Winkle investing is to go to sleep. Although it sounds like the simplest, it is likely the most difficult principle to apply. In fact, it is completely counterintuitive and contradictory to everything we know about life and human nature. The key element is learning to overcome to impulse to react. You will likely be facing regular bouts of either greed or fear – and your task is to ignore them both. It takes discipline and serious belief in the voracity of the conclusions of countless objective studies.

Any successful person knows that professional success depends, in most cases, on hard work. Scientists sift through data to prove their convictions. Many entrepreneurs rely on highly refined instincts and inspiration to make bold business moves. Soldiers are well trained to react and respond to danger immediately. Even animals in the jungle instinctively respond to threats with either fight or flight.

These deeply ingrained attitudes and behaviors are actually counterproductive when investing. For example, investors tend to sell stocks after a big drop, when the pain is no longer bearable. Generally speaking they are destined to sell at the worst times, right before an upward price reversal. On the other hand, investors will often buy once they see a stock shoot up, not wanting to miss out on the upside, only do catch the ensuing downward correction. Analysts will pour over mountains of data and make a determination that is outdated by changing circumstances as quickly it is publicized. Simply put, the cards are stacked against us and we are hard wired to do the wrong things at the wrong time.

RVW investing is scientific and disciplined. RVW investing is a highly disciplined and there is no room for reacting to gut feelings or intuition Rip Van Winkle investors, transcend the feebleness of all-to-human investing behavior. They know from the outset that their investment will go up and down over time. They understand clearly that the stock market is like a man walking up stairs while playing with a yoyo. Over the long term, it is completely irrelevant if the yoyo goes up and down, because his feet are always climbing and the key is to watch the feet and not the yoyo. The RVW approach is so simple, so straight forward and so validated by the empirical evidence that all a rational investor ever need to do is invest right, then sleep tight.

The Underpinnings Of The RVW Approach: Why It Works

In 1900, a Frenchman named Louis Bachelier, completed a thesis called “Theory of Speculation,” in which he concluded that stock market prices follow a “random walk” in which historic price trends have no predictable influence on future price movement.. Six decades later, the efficient-markets hypothesis finally began to gain widespread acceptance in academic circles. Paul A. Samuelson, the famous neoclassical economist drew attention to the seminal work of Bachelier’s paper, and Eugene F. Fama tested the theory against actual U.S. market data. Fama’s findings supported the thesis of Bachelier: An investor can learn no useful information about likely future stock market prices by examining past performance. Fundamental analysis, technical analysis, industry insight and other esoteric Wall Street techniques for predicting stock-price movements are demonstrably worthless.

This theory was advanced significantly and began to gain widespread acceptance when Burton G. Malkiel published his classic work “A Random Walk Down Wall Street” in which he further evolved the “efficient market hypothesis” showing how prices of publicly traded assets reflect all available information. Predicting stock price movements is therefore a futile attempt to forecast randomness. “The true news is random,” says Malkiel, a Wall Street banker turned Princeton professor. “That’s what people had trouble grasping. It’s not that stock prices are capricious. It’s that the news is capricious.” This hypothesis is at the heart of the RVW approach and is our academic gospel. It is the reason over $1 trillion of assets has moved out of stock picking, mutual funds and active management - and into passive index-based funds.

Wage Garnishment

By Selwyn Gerber: Everything you needed to know about investing, but were working too hard at it to ask.

Tax Problem Resolution

The book that follows outlines the most straight forward and effective strategy for smart investing. In fact, it is so simple and so clear that a person of average intelligence should be able to grasp it by reading this short introduction. For those of you who are skeptics, and require greater proof, the ensuing chapters will expound upon these ideas and illustrate them with graphs and historical statistics. You will learn not only what to do but why it works and the field of wealth management will be demystified. For the rest of you, the following few pages should be enough to radically redefine your approach to preserving your wealth and making it grow. You will be empowered, able to take charge of the management role and beat the pros hands down.

Rip Van Winkle: Investment Guru?

The modern world and free market economies have provided more opportunities for wealth generation than have existed at any previous time in human history. More ordinary people find themselves blessed with financial success that would have been unthinkable only generations ago. All of us face the prospect growing old at a time when the Social Security system as we know it seems in jeopardy and the needs for healthcare and living costs in old age are higher than ever.

As we march forward in the 21st century, markets are becoming more volatile and complex. The proliferation of sophisticated investment vehicles such as hedge-funds, derivatives, synthetics, and an alphabet soup of specialized purpose investments has only made the process of investing more stressful and confusing to the average person. As the wise King Solomon noted, “the wealth of the rich will not allow him to sleep.” (Ecclesiastes 5:12)

Financial Advisors

Imagine, if you will, what would happen to your financial position if you were to avoid making any investment decisions for the next twenty years. Instead of spending your valuable time agonizing over the difficulty and uncertainty of deploying and monitoring capital, you could spend that same time laying on the beach, playing golf, or even sipping whiskey at the local pub. For a select few, investing is a love pursued with passionate devotion. The rest of us, however, would prefer to devote our time to family, pet causes, hobbies, and recreation.

Nevertheless, most of us would consider ignoring our portfolios to be irresponsible and a sure fire recipe for financial ruin. Thus, we either spend countless hours wrestling with our investment decisions or we put our faith in the hands of professional managers, usually with disappointing results.
What if there were a way to structure your finances whereby you had the clarity and confidence to know that you would better off twenty years from now by simply doing nothing?

Many of us were brought up to believe that success is a function of hard work. We have been taught that laziness is a deadly sin that promises to impede any progress in life. In fact, Washington Irving’s famous character, Rip Van Winkle, is depicted as a floundering fool who falls into drunken slumber for twenty years and awakes to a world that has moved on without him, barely noticing he was even gone. Rip is the anti-hero who teaches us that a life of inaction is a wasted life. Following his example will certainly not produce a life of personal growth, satisfying relationships or astounding productivity. Yet, when it comes to investing, old Van Winkle might have something to teach us after all.

Financial markets behave in a manner that is often mystifying both to the uninitiated and the veteran alike. Most investors subscribe to a belief that through diligent research and analysis, they can select the right stocks and the right managers and even determine the right timing to make their investment decisions. Empirical data shows that this belief is a myth. In the short term, there is no question that certain strategies and some managers can and will provide returns above the market as a whole. That being said, the cold hard facts demonstrate clearly that over time, active strategies consistently fall short of their own market index benchmarks. Experts agree that by simply owning index funds, and patiently weathering the volatile tides of market activity, investors will ensure market returns…

Kitchen Worktops Tips To Improve Your Home

Monday, May 5th, 2008

To some, remodeling is going to be fun. Those that enjoy working with their hands and creating improvements to their home. No matter how much you enjoy it though, there are some parts of kitchen remodeling that would be hard pressed to describe as fun. The inconvenience for one thing. If you have pulled your kitchen to pieces, there is going to be some time when you cannot wash up for example, unless you use the sink somewhere else. A sink that was no designed for such things! I know, because I have done it, and I can guarantee that is no fun at all!

Fitted Kitchens
When is the right time to start a kitchen remodeling task? The kitchen is in use all the time, or it is in most homes, especially if you have children. The best time to do this kind of work is in the summer, or at least when the evenings are warm and dry. Why? Because you can organise some outdoor meals such as barbecues, which take the pressure off the kitchen. You can get some take aways too, and for a short period of time, you can manage. The warmers days (and nights) also help with drying time for decorating, glues and tiling etc.

Fitted Kitchens
The other problem is the length of time to the end of the project. Are you doing all of the work yourself? If so, make sure you allow enough time. I have seem trained craftsmen, with help and the right tools struggle to finish a kitchen in a week. And there is the secondary fixing and decorating to finish. If you are doing everything yourself and you do not have the right tools, you could be in for a long haul. If you are in doubt, get some help in for parts of it. There will be electrical and plumbing work to be done as well as work with gas pipes in some circumstances. In England, you are legally obliged to get accredited help when dealing with gas, so you will not be able to avoid it.

Fitted Kitchens
Maybe a whole remodel is too much for you, and you might be able to consider the job in segments. Perhaps you could do a cosmetic job and change the look of the kitchen without changing the structure. If your budget is tight, then this could be a viable option for you. Don’t underestimate the disruption that a full blown remodel will cause. There will be a lot a dirt, rubble and dust spread around, and the dust will find it’s way to areas you didn’t want it to go; I can guarantee that!

The bottom line if to plan your kitchen remodeling and organise everything you need well in advance. If you plan what you are letting yourself in for, and organise yourself properly, you can mitigate the disruption and get your new kitchen in no time at all.

Imagine Giving A alaska fly fishing for a baby shower instead of the usual baby skin care product

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Yes, I am serious, there are folks that gave Fishing In Alaska meant for a baby shower. Of course, it is not for the baby! It is actually meant for the couple to have a short holiday, providing them a time to bond together.

Growing as a family is what matters, anyway, they would probably get many Organic Baby Skin Care products. So, a short fishing in Alaska would do the couple more good and let them get used to each other to prepare for their parenthood ahead of them.

Of course, this is not to say that if you are not going to give organic baby skin care product, than you can bring any gifts for a baby shower. It is after all, an occasions that celebrate a new birth, so the gift has to be meaningful.

A gift represents a blessing and cheers from you to the person receiving it, so if the intention is good and you feel that the gift would bless them in some ways, you should be creative and have some fun in the process of preparing for the gift!

I know that inflation is at all time high, and people are trying to cut cost as best as they could, but giving a “free gift” to people on their baby shower, is really “cheap”. Doing this, not only cheapen yourself, it also hurts the other person to learn how important they are to you.

My sister got a coffee maker as one of her baby shower’s gift. And if it those Best Coffee Machines where people would pay hundreds because if brews good coffee, it is actually quite meaningful.

People give one of those best rated coffee makers, as it is both cheeky and fun to imply that the couple would need coffee to keep them awake for this new bundle of joy. Coffee machine would make an interesting gift.

However, when you saw that the gift is a gevalia coffee maker, those that you get if free when you buy the coffee, you are sad at the person at being so inconsiderate for an occasion that is so meaningful.

Although, we say “no” to giving “free gifts” as presents, do not let the price tag of the present bothers you. As long as you put some effort into the present, even making a card is meaningful, the idea is not to just give the present for the sake of giving. Give something, that you know would bring a smile to the recipient…

Shopping For Baby Monitors

Monday, May 5th, 2008

Everyone with a baby should have a baby monitor. The idea behind a baby monitor is that you can have the facility to move around the house or your yard and still be able to keep tabs on your baby by listening or now viewing your baby.

By having a baby monitor, you do not have to frequently walk in their room to check on them. Listening to a baby monitor can keep you from waking them up every time you go in their room. Waking up a baby out of a sound sleep can be upsetting to both you and your baby.

It’s very helpful and handy nowadays to have a video baby monitor as it helps you keep an eye on what your baby does or listen to what he says, whether he’s calling for you or is crying because he is wet, sleepy or hungry.

Through a video baby monitor, you never miss a second checking out your baby while you work on something else in another room in your house. You need not shell out for a nanny to watch over your child as he sleeps and you need not worry going away from your baby because you have another important thing to attend to—all you need is a video baby monitor. When buying a baby monitor, you should know what are the qualities of a good baby monitor.

Look for the following features when buying a baby monitor. There are two types of baby monitors, wireless and plug-in. It is recommended that you buy the wireless one, as this one ensures mobility and freedom to use outside of the house. If you purchase the wireless baby monitor, you get more flexibility and you are not stuck to only one location. Also, you can take it out with you in the range specified and monitor the activities of your baby while finishing your other chores. Find out more about the advantages and disadvantages of wireless baby monitors at babymonitorguide.net.

The quality of your monitor will decide the kind of reception you would get, although most monitors are designed for optimal performance. Some popular models are ‘Graco Ultra Clear Monitor’ and ‘Graco Family Listen N Talk Monitor.’ Other models like the DaisyCam™ is a beautifully designed fun baby monitor with clear TV transmission and crystal clear sound and rechargeable batteries. Before going out to shop for the best baby monitors, make sure you get all the information that you need to know about baby monitors.

Apart from these features, you should also make use of recommendations on the performance of the baby monitor from published reports and user comments. This is more imperative than going by the brand name since some manufacturers produce different models that perform better than others in their product line. Do not focus solely on the cost. Keep in mind the quality. Generally, the baby monitors will start from about 30 to 40 dollars and can go up to 150 dollars or more.

Achieve A ‘GREAT’ Score On Your Google Adwords Campaign

Monday, May 5th, 2008

p.s. - I did it in under 10 minutes

p.p.s. - The people who know how to do this save a ton on their adwords costs from google. Wouldn’t you like to pay half for your keywords and get more traffic?

As webmaster of Video Search Engine http://www.directvutv.com I’ve run many adwords campaigns resulting in hundreds of millions of impressions. I often find it funny how there is such an uproar in the SEO community over Adwords and why it is ‘unfair’ to advertisers.

Over the last years, enough blogs and posts complaining about the ‘google slap’ have been written to make Richard Branson’s trip to Mars a reality. We could simply stretch out all the comments and walk over them. If you don’t know anything about the ‘Google Slap’, just Google - google slap.

Google’s mission is simple, they just want the user to get the best experience so that they continue to use the website. They want the user to believe that Google will always come up with the best results.

So, when a Google searcher enters — Buy Bitem Dog Toy Houston, the ads that come up will be perfectly related to the search and the searcher will be able to immediately buy the Bitem Dog Toy from a store in Houston.

So, if the manufacturer of Bitem Dog Toys (Sales 21 Billion last year) is has a Google Adwords campaign competing with Dog World Toys of Houston, (sales $3.50 for fiscal 2008), Dog World Toys will win, so long as the Dog World Toys site makes it easy for someone in Houston to buy a Bitem Dog Toy.

The searcher asked, and the searcher got.

Google calls this the ‘Quality Score’ and the score is directly related to the keywords used and the content on the web site.

When you create an adwords campaign, Google will look at the ‘landing page’ you designate for the keyword and grade the ad group against the lowest score of keyword to landing page. This is important - If you have 5 great keywords and 1 poor one, the ad group will score low. So, only have great keywords, and don’t have ANY off-target ones.

So, you keywords and ad group will be ranked Poor, Good or Great. If it’s poor they will make your minimum bid something like $2.00 per click and suggest you improve it. If it’s good, they might charge you only a minimum bid of $0.10 to $0.20. If it’s Great, you will have a minium bid of as little as $0.01 per click, but more importantly, you are going to show more often and higher up on the results than more expensive HIGHER good keywords.

On their website, Google uses talks about Green Beans saying that people who enter Green Beans want to see Green Bean recipies and if presented with Green Jelly Beans, they would have a ‘bad experience’ and would be disappointed with Google.

So I took this example and twisted it a little. I put together the following web page on one of the sites I manage, finfa.info, a clickbank e-book reseller.

The page is the Best Green Jellybean Web page and can be found at www.Finfa.Info.

I didn’t use any style sheets or style directives to prove that Google doesn’t care what your page looks like. All they look at are the following. And, it’s pretty much the order laid out here.

Title Tag
Meta Description
Meta Keywords - Google says they don’t look at this except when your page has no other content, but it only takes a minute and MSN, Yahoo and other search engines do use these tags.
H1 Headline
H2 Sub Head
H3 Sub Head
Paragraphs containing Text
B Bold Tags
I Italic Tags
U Underline Tags
LI List Items
a Anchor Text

The content of the page is just but uses all these tags and keywords to make it clear to the robot scanning the page that the page is definately about Green Jelly beans and that you can buy green jellybeans on the page.

So, once I posted the page on the finfa.info web site, I created the following Google Ad Campaign

Best Green Jellybean Site
Get Your Green Jellybeans from the
Only Green Jellybean site online.
www.Finfa.Info

Google suggests that you put a ‘call to action’ in your advertisment. While they don’t let you put words like ‘click here’ in an ad or exclamation points, they do suggest affirmative copy - Get Your Green Jellybeans - meets that criteria.

So, what happened. Google computed the quality scores and it ranked the campaign as Great - You can see my page capture here.

Buying A Guitar? Here Are 5 Tips To Remember

Monday, May 5th, 2008

If you are considering buying an Acoustic Guitar, you should know how to select the right one to buy. There are some things you need to check in an Acoustic Guitar and knowing what to look at will help you bring home the right guitar for you.

Guitar bodies often come in the same hourglass shape, but with some variations such as size, color, wood type used, style, and its extra features. The commonly used acoustic guitar is the folk style guitar that you often see get played at parties and campfires, the same type common in music groups and church choirs.

There are a variety of acoustic guitars that you can buy and if price is a factor, you naturally get what you pay for. As a personal rule I don’t buy cheap, but I do buy when I get a bargain or if a guitar is on sale. Buying a new guitar or previously owned guitar both have pros and cons; like if you buy a new guitar you are likely to get a warranty and, sometimes a return period if you’re not happy with your purchase, or if it has some sort of unnoticed defect. A used guitar can usually be purchased cheaper and has already gone through its “break-in” period.

Commercially built guitars are usually mass produced while “custom-made” guitars are exactly that; custom built and tailored to your requirements by a highly skilled guitar maker. Custom made guitars are often more expensive than commercially built guitars, with the prices of custom-made guitars influenced by the skill level of the guitar maker. A custom built guitar is thus unique and therefore hard to compare in price to a commercially built guitar.

Whether you are buying a new guitar or old one, here are some tips to keep in mind.

Check the BODY

The guitar body is the part with the sound hole in the front, and can vary in size, shape, type of wood, coating, and general build of the body. All these affects how the guitar sounds. Check the body for bumps, scratches, splits, dents or even holes. The body is usually the part that gets banged-up the most.

Check the NECK, FRETBOARD & MACHINE HEADS

The guitar neck is the long piece of wood that extends from the body to the head of the guitar where the tuning heads or machine heads are found. The guitar strings travel from the bridge that is found on the guitar body, across the sound hole, along the fret board which is on the front surface of the guitar neck, all the way to the tuning heads where they are wrapped around tuning posts. Lay the guitar on a flat surface like a table and inspect the neck at eye level to check if the neck is warped or twisted. This usually happens if a guitar is left in a hot area like propped against a hot surface or left in the trunk of a car of in the back seat, under the heat of the sun.

Let your eyesight skim across the front of the body and down the fret board. You should be able to see if the neck is twisted or bowing.

The fret board is glued to the front of the neck. This is the surface where you press the strings to form a chord or play individual notes. Because it’s glued on separately, a fret board can be made of a wood that’s different from the neck.

The strings travel over the fret board and the distance they are above the fret board makes a difference to the playability of the guitar. If the strings are too far above the fret board, then they will be hard to press down, making the guitar hard to play. A guitar with the strings too far above the fret board, known as ‘high action’, will cause the player’s fingers to hurt so much.

Check the action of the guitar by pressing down on the strings at various points on the fret board, or simply try playing it and see if your fret hand is comfortable on the strings.

You need to check if the guitar is in tune. First tune the guitar, it is important that you tune it using a guitar tuner. This ensures that all open strings are tuned to chords, E-A-D-G-B-E. Then play different chords at different parts of the guitar neck and listen for some notes that are flat or sharp. If you are not particularly good at spotting which is out of tune, you can use the guitar tuner to check each and every note to see if the tuning is consistent for the entire length of the neck.

If the neck is warped, and the guitar is properly tuned, some of the chords will not sound good or will sound out of tune. If this happens, check the tuning again and if the problem persists, don’t buy the guitar.

While on the subject of tuning, check the tuning heads and see if they turn easily or are very stiff and hard to turn. Even with the high tension of the strings, a good quality guitar will have tuning heads that are fairly easy to turn.

Check the BRIDGE

The bridge is found on the front of the body, just a few inches away from the sound hole on the side that is opposite to the neck. The bridge is where guitar strings are usually fed, anchored or snapped into place before they cross the hole and travel up the neck to the tuning heads. Guitar bridges are made of either hard plastic, wood or metal. Guitar bridges are known to crack or split, so if you are getting a previously owned guitar, check the bridge to make sure that it won’t split or fly off the body after playing it a few times.

Check the STRINGS

Acoustic guitar strings come in different types. They can be made out of nylon, brass, steel, or a combination. Nylon strings are usually only found on classical guitars and have a rich, warm sound to them.

The strings also come in different ‘weights’, or sizes; some string packages are marked “heavy” and are usually thick in size and sound “beefy”. Strings that are “light”, or “extra light”, are very thin with a brighter sound to them and are less boomy than heavy strings. The string should actually be the last thing on your mind, but if you want to be spared from re stringing, then ask the seller to put on a new set of strings if they are rusting or old; in the latter case some cannot be tuned properly.

Check its PLAYABILITY

If you already know how to play guitar, then give it a try and start playing on it, see how it feels. If you are getting the guitar for yourself, try the following. Fit your hand around the neck or fret board and see if it is comfortable to play the chords. The guitar should also have a size and shape that you are comfortable playing with, and is easy to hold. Listen to its sound, and if you don’t play yet, ask someone else to play it for you so that you can judge what it sounds like.

Despite the number of websites that sell music instruments, it is always best to buy a guitar from a physical retail music store that allows you to inspect the guitar before purchasing it. While buying from a website or from a catalog may allow you to save on the purchase, it won’t mean anything if you get sent a guitar that is difficult for you to play.

Now that you got your own guitar, the only thing left is how to play it. If you do not know how to play or are just starting out, you can get find several Guitar Lessons online.

Loans like this are available to help most people that require extra money and can be used just like a regular loan.Late or missed payments can often be the reason a person’s credit score has been lowered and these situations could be due to quite innocent oversights. Fortunately it is possible to rectify the situation.
These bad credit loans may be used for other situations and not necessarily debts, so it could be used for an emergency expense that has arisen like medical fees not covered by insurance or a wedding for example. There are people who borrow money even when they do not need it because they want to repair their credit score. They use a loan that they can pay regularly, as a means to achieve this.

There are two options available, secured and unsecured loans, but with the secured option the amount of loan will be greater, up to 150,000 dollars and the repayment period can be extended to a period of twenty five years. Whereas with an unsecured loan, the maximum amount that can be borrowed is fifty thousand dollars and the repayment term reduced to a maximum of ten years.
The risk of defaulting is much lower with a secured loan as the finance company take a charge on your property which is also the reason they can arrange the loan at a preferential rate of interest. The benefits of an unsecured loan are that the home or other valuable item is not put at risk if the person defaults on the loan but as a consequence there is a higher rate of interest to pay each month.
It is even possible for individuals with debts and court judgments for previous defaults on loans to obtain bad credit loans. It will probably be necessary to carry out some research online first. Loans arranged when court judgments are in force are harder to find, especially if you have special needs such as extending the period of the loan for example, so applications will need to be carried out online.
There shouldn’t be too much trouble arranging a bad credit loan but they can make a world of difference to person who is in desperate need of the money. Whenever a situation like this occurs, it is always preferable to make the loan application online; this will speed up the process and allow you to relax once it is done.
Finally, with loans for someone with bad credit, the opportunity to maintain credibility in the financial market by paying previous debts whilst rebuilding credit history, has got to be a good thing.
