Help For Dogs Experiencing Allergic Reactions

We usually don’t stop to think about how the allergies we suffer from could also be affecting our pets. dog allergies can cause so many problems we never think about. The allergies affecting our dogs can make them miserable and grouchy just like they do us. Canine allergies have been known to make dogs extremely sick. Left untreated, the conditions only worsen so it is important to be aware of these conditions.

Dogs and Fleas Just Don’t Get Along

Allergies experienced by our furry friends tend to fall into three groupings. The initial consideration is flea bites. No doubt you’ve watched many a dog scratch and bite himself seeking relief, especially during warmer months when fleas are more prevalent. You will see clumps of hair scattered on your carpet and self- inflicted wounds from the biting. The constant itching drives your pet crazy.

To the naked eye, you may not even spot any fleas due to the dog’s continual scratching activities. The allergic reaction, however, is caused more from the flea’s saliva than the bite itself. Unfortunately, there is no ultimate solution to eliminate your pet’s agony, though there are some that can help to minimize outward symptoms. The real solution is flea prevention; there are collars, sprays, and even internal shots from veterinarians that can help.

Canine Allergies from Food

Perhaps surprisingly, a dog can experience an allergic reaction from its favorite activity - eating. But in this regard, dogs are fairly similar to people. Eating eggs or wheat could cause problems, as well as chicken and beef sometimes serving as the culprits. Since many dog meals consist of one or more of these food items, special care must be taken to initially identify which is the cause.

While no one knows what causes theses particular canine allergies, there are preventive measures you can take. You may want to put your dog on a hypo-allergenic food & supplements for 2 to 3 months. This will allow your dog to be relieved of some of the symptoms associated with the canine allergies to certain foods.

Once the symptoms are gone, you can slowly add foods back into the diet, one ever two weeks or so. If you start to notice the symptoms returning, simply remove the added food from the diet as that is probably what is causing this particular canine allergy.

Environmental Canine Allergies

Just as food allergies may be surprising, a dog may also experience allergic symptoms from pollen, dirt, and spores in the air they breathe. Atopy is an allergy, involving an inherited immunoglobulin which predisposes a person or animal to certain allergic responses. This is unfortunately a problem that an impacted dog will experience for the duration of its life, and the typical symptoms will persist.

The treatment for canine allergies due to the environment is through medicine, medicated shampoos or seventy-five percent of canine allergies, though, so the odds are good.

If your dog has not been troubled by allergies in the past but has begun to experience them, it is worth a visit to the family veteranarian for an assessment. The capability of that person being able to detect a core problem early on and address it promptly will help prevent a lot of unnecessary suffering. And your pet, in its own way, will appreciate you all-the-more.
