Learning About The Brazilian Mastiff
The Brazilian Mastiff is a large dog believed to have been bred in Brazil from a number of different breeds, mostly the Mastiff, the Bloodhound, and the Bulldog. These dogs were usually used on Brazil’s large plantations and cattle farms as guard dogs. It said that they were also used to track Brazilian slaves and fugitives because they are excellent tracking dogs.
As you might have already deduced, the Brazilian Mastiff makes for a great guard dog. Inbred in them is the instinct to protect their family and property from strangers. The Brazilian Mastiff requires a confident, experienced owner who can handle the size and temperament of this dog. The male Mastiff stands between 27-30 inches at the shoulder and weighs about 110 pounds. Brazilian Mastiffs have coats that are short and smooth and are reddish tan, black, brindled, and yellow in color. The eyes are deep set and medium to large in size with colors from yellow to dark chestnut. Loose thick skin also covers their large and broad bodies.
This Mastiff is very agile. Their joints are loose which allows the dog to change his direction extremely quickly even if he is moving at a full-blown gallop. This makes for a bit of a contradiction between the way the Brazilian Mastiff looks, and their physical abilities. They’re really great animals and loyal pets!
