Pet Care and Choosing a Pet
One of the most exciting things about keeping pets is that there literally is a pet for pretty much every personality out there. Regardless of whether you are looking for a simple pet, or a high maintenance pet, a pet that requires a lot of attention or one that prefers never to be held, there are enough domesticated animals out there that your perfect pet probably does exist. The level of pet care that your animal requires is a consideration that you need to make when choosing a pet because each animal requires a completely different level of pet care in order to live the best quality life.
Dogs and cats, for example, tend to be high maintenance pets when it comes to pet care. Both require regular grooming, flea and tick treatments, vaccinations, vet visits and daily feedings. Both dogs and cats require an additional level of pet care in the form of affection, love and attention. You cannot get a dog or a cat and simply expect for it to be content by itself all the time.
If you are looking for lower maintenance pet care, you may be better suited for a reptile, or a small animal such as a guinea pig or rat. Small furry animals tend to do well in pairs, and require far less attention than what a cat or dog would need. These small animals still do require a certain level of pet care, and some of the more exotic animals like ferrets and reptiles are going to require specialized knowledge and understanding in order to properly care for them.
Many people assume that birds are low maintenance pets, but they actually have strict requirements in order to be healthy and happy. Birds are best suited for individuals who are willing to spend a lot of time dealing with pet care on a daily basis.
There is no companion pet out there that does not come with its own unique pet care requirements. Even fish, which appear to be a relatively low maintenance animal, have their own unique requirements. It is vital that you maintain the right pH balance and temperature in their water, for example, and overfeeding or underfeeding can cause dire results. So while fish may not require affection or attention of any kind really, there is still a certain level of pet care required.
When you decide that you want to bring home a new pet, it is essential that you address the level of pet care that is required to give that pet the highest quality of life possible. Do as much research as you can on pet care before you bring home any new pet, this way there will be no surprises and you will be prepared for anything and everything that comes up in the process of owning said companion. Pet care may not be an exact science, but it is vital to know what you can, because pets are not simply disposable possessions and you need to be prepared for everything that comes with proper pet care no matter what pet you decide to bring home.
