What You Need To Know About The Types Of Sport Bets

When placing sport bets, you do not just place your bet just because you like the sound and look of them. You have to educate yourself on the types of sport bets, how they work, and how much you risk losing or how much you can win.

The Types of Sport Bets

There are usually two general types of sport bets offered by online bookmakers - the straight up bet (also known as money line) and the point spread bet.

The money line sport bets are usually used for sports where point spreads are unrealistic. This applies to football, baseball and hockey as well as to individual matches like boxing and tennis. You just need to place your bet on who you think will be the winner of the event, no score differences considered.

For example, the odds offered are Green Bay -230, which makes them the favorite, while Denver +200, which makes them the underdog. If you bet on Green Bay, every $1 bet earns you 43 cents (100/230=.43). If you bet on Denver, every $1 bet earns you $2 (200/100 = 2:1).

The point spread sport bets are more complicated because the favorite team must win by a predetermined point spread, thus the name. A bet on the underdog means they can win or lose so long as they lose by no more than the predetermined point spread.

For example, the odds offered are Green Bay 5. If you pick Denver and the final score is Green Bay 31 and Denver 28, you will win. How? Just add 5 to Denver’s final score, which will give you 33. Unless agreed beforehand, the odds are always
-110, which means that you earn $10 more for every $11 you bet.

Concerns and Issues Related to Sport Bets

Sports writers and professional sports gamblers are divided on the issue of sport betting systems used for sports bets. Others swear to their effectiveness while others criticize them as nothing more than get-rich quick schemes of oily salesmen.

There are also scandals involving rigging of games such that scores are predetermined even before the game starts. Indeed, sport bets arranged by bookmakers have built-in advantages much like how free casino bets and free poker bets have built-in advantages for the casinos.
