The craze of playing poker has swept the nation. Our neighbors love to play cards and we get together often to have a few drinks and snacks and to play cards. It seems as soon as my neighbor starts losing at a particular game we have to learn another one. His latest game he wanted to teach us is 3 card poker. I have had trouble learning how to place bets with other poker games, but he assured me that this is one of the easiest pokers to learn how to play. Considering we play for chips and not money I was game to try something new.

My neighbor’s wife is like I am when it comes to playing cards. Holding the cards in our hands is an excuse to get together and visit. I don’t care if we play 3 card poker or crazy 8’s, I like getting together for drinks, food and gossip. The neighbor said all we needed to play 3 card poker was a standard deck of fifty two playing cards. He said that 3 card poker involves two different games that are played at the same time. I thought this sounded complicated, but he assured me that one of the games takes no skill at all, the dealers hand is immaterial and there is no discarding.

My husband had never played 3 card poker before either. We teased my neighbor that he only wanted to play 3 card poker to increase his own chances of winning, considering he was playing with three people who had never heard of the game before. He said the game had been around a long time and was also called tri-card poker. None of us had heard of tri-card poker either.

We started playing and at first it seemed that there had to be something missing because it was so easy to learn. By the third round we all had the hang of playing 3 card poker and my neighbor’s wife was building up quite a pile of chips. After playing for 45 minutes our neighbor decided that we should play something other than 3 card poker. His reason was that he thought it was too simple of a game to be playing. The real reason was that his wife had most of his chips! We decided to play one of our other favorite games, but I am sure that in the future we will try 3 card poker again because it really was fun and easy to play.

Some of the most “American” and innovative dishes of the past century were created by a former waiter who had risen to become the “maitre d’” of the famous Waldorf Hotel in New York City. His name was Oscar Tschirky and along with the waldorf salad he is also credited with the invention of eggs benedict and thousand island dressing.

According to some sources, this unique apple salad was created to honor the guests of a “society supper” to celebrate the opening of the Waldorf Hotel with a unique dish. It was later published in a cookbook by Oscar Tschirky which he simply called “The Cookbook by Oscar of the Waldorf”. It was an instant hit and has since had its place in American restaurants and kitchens.

The now famous salad originally had only three ingredients (chopped apples and celery combined with mayonnaise). Since then many additions have been made to the waldorf salad recipe, most importantly the fact that walnuts and raisins are now almost always added to this simple fruit salad. It is often served on a bed of green salad and is quite frequently turned into an entree by adding grilled chicken, turkey and the likes.

It is still served at the “Oscar’s” at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The original Waldorf hotel was torn down and the Waldorf Astoria was built a few blocks away in the early 20th century. Oscar moved to the new location and worked as the manager until his retirement in the 1940s.

Blue Roses

Long before Autumn,
Long before June,
I sent you blue roses
Beneath a white moon.

Almost six years ago,
Under the sky,
I watched the stars
And I swallowed a sigh.

You spoke of sunshine
And laughter and life…
I remained red-eyed,
Saddened with strife.

The wind of your woes was
As much as I heard.
I sent you two roses
And whispered a word.

My life lived inside me
When your life was near.
And my heart faded
When yours disappeared.

There were spirits inside
Your eyes flickering like fire,
They would rise, and then die,
And then trembling, rise higher.

Alone in the morning,
I stood with the wind.
I stepped out inside me
And silently sinned.

Olympics In London
The city of London is gearing up for the upcoming Olympics that is set on 2012. The preparation includes the development of new sports stadium that will house several thousands of participants from all over the world, the polishing of road networks, among other things to be done. Indeed The 2012 Olympics is an event that must be anticipated.

There had been 2 Olympics hosting made by the city of London– the first was on 1908 and the second one was on 1948. Today, the city is preparing for its 3rd hosting because, once again, the city is hosting The 2012 Olympics. As a matter of fact the construction of the stadium that will house majority of the events have begun. As they say, this state-of-the-art project is set to design having the latest technology. They also say that this complex will be on architecture that can be used even after The 2012 Olympics.

There had been 5 cities who have participated the selection process and this included prime cities of the world– Madrid, Paris, New York, Moscow, and London. There were lots of considerations evaluated in order to qualify and in the end, the city of London captured the hosting. So why London?
