These days, the average American with debt carries more than $8,000 in debt on credit
cards. (Of course, the debt we have from mortgages, car loans and other loans don’t count
in this amount.) For many people, this causes them no stress, but most people worry about
the amount of debt they carry and for good reason – learning to control and reduce debt is
one step toward financial freedom, something most of us would love to attain.

In this article, we’ll look at several ideas for credit card debt reduction. Some might not
be interesting to you, while others will strike you as something you can try.

Getting Rid of credit debt
Focus on one credit card at a time, perhaps paying only minimum payments on the others.

When you get extra money, say a tax refund, or a bonus at work, apply that toward the one credit card you are working on.

Add as much money as you can each month to the card you are working on paying off. You can make more than one payment per month, so even after you have made your monthly payment, remember you can make more payments. Set up your account online so can quickly and easily make payments from your checking account.

Apply any regular savings in your daily life to your credit card debt. For example, any savings from using coupons or rebates you should apply to your debt.

Using these tips, you can begin to see your debt being reduced.

Finally, don’t incur additional debt. Forget carrying a card for emergencies. Don’t carry
any credit cards with you. You can certainly carry your debit card, but no credit cards.
If you are carrying them, there’s a chance you’ll use them. And that’s certainly contrary
to your interest in reducing your credit card debt.

If you are feeling particularly committed, cut up your credit cards, and keep just one.
This is the one you can use when you need to reserve a hotel or rental car, or if that
emergency pops up.

Successful credit card debt reduction
To successfully see your credit card balances reduced, you must be committed. It’s not
easy to take extra money and apply that to debt, and not spend it. It’s not easy to shop
with cash only and not credit, especially if it’s become a habit. But if you reduce or
completely eliminate your credit card debt, you will begin to see the immense benefits of
financial freedom.
