Becoming Cary - With Cufflinks!

Who says you can’t channel Old World sophistication in the Bronx or from inside a Greenwhich apartment? You don’t have to be to the manor born and bred to look like the suave Cary Grant or the polished Mr. Darcy. To ooze refinement and elegance from toe to fingertip, go for customized things like a pocket watch and its corresponding pocket watch accessories, personalized money clips, and the ever reliable cufflink.

Cufflinks are to your suit what stilettos are to a woman’s dress. They are not only stylish, they give a touch of color to an otherwise austere outfit. Cufflink designs vary widely. The simplest consists of a short post or chain connecting two disc-shaped parts. The part positioned on the visible side is generally larger. The smaller piece, meanwhile, can be attached to the larger piece through different means. It may have a part that spins on the central post, thereby allowing it to rotate into right angles to the post when used. Or, it may be small enough to fit a button hole. Then again, it could be separated and attached from the other side.

If you’re trendy enough to acknowledge the importance of cufflinks, however, why settle for the plain ones? personalized cufflinks add so much more flair to an outfit, and can be so much fun to wear. The visible part of your personalized cufflinks can be decorated in different ways. These may be inlaid with precious and semi-precious stones. These can be monogrammed with your initials, for example, or your nickname. If you’re a doctor, you can have Rx engraved onto your cufflinks. If you’re the sentimental type, you can have your wife’s or sweetheart’s name etched onto your cufflinks, thereby wearing your heart on your sleeve - literally!

When it comes to cufflinks and style, the possibilities are endless. Of course, one cannot wear cufflinks without link cuffs, also known as double cuffs or French cuffs. These link cuffs may either be single or double-length, and may be worn barrel-style in which one end overlaps the other, “kissing”, or with the ends pinched together - but we can leave all the fancy-schmancy terminology for another article.
