When the summer comes, many people are starting to think about the most common summer nuisance, pests that come into your home and your garden, then rampantly multiply until you are overrun with the little nasties.

However just because you see one fly in the parlor does not mean you now have a fly infestation, if you see a few dozen ants going across your kitchen floor it may be time to call in the professional pest control specialist.

I need a job. I am tired of being home with kids all day long. I may go out of my mind. I need to have an adult life more than escaping to the stores in the evening. I think it will be good for the whole family if the kids go to daycare while I get my time away, besides I think I will be a better mom due to the fact that I won’t be around them all day long . Absence makes the heart grow fonder, so I know that after a long day of work I will be happy to spend time with them when I get home . Now I have that part figured out . Now it’s been quite a few years since I have worked and I am not sure I know how to do anything anymore. It’s very rewarding raising kids but not very taxing on the brain cells; maybe I’ve lost some of them from lack of use. I began my job search, with all the typical places online to look such as HotJobs.com, monster.com and craigslist.com . I’ve noticed a trend of easy money jobs that are all obviously a hoax, I may have lost a few brain cells while away from real work, but I am not stupid . There are also a ton of jobs that are straight commission, working sales, probably selling vacuum cleaners door to door . Wait, I just came across a job for Data entry for a Data storage company. This seems like something I can do. I’m going to send my resume and beg them for a job. I understand that I am not supposed to sound desperate but honestly I need out of this house, so I am at the point of desperation .
My business is a jewelry store, and I have to admit I love it . We have everything available from cheaper silver pieces to the high end diamonds plus we can order in or custom make whatever a person feels like, as long as they’re willing to dish out the money for a custom piece. The problem I am having though is keeping track of everything. Every time we get new pieces they have to be hand recorded in log sheets. I know this is archaic but we were a start up company and not one person had any idea on how to deal with computers . But these days we have to figure out some other way. I understand that there are various technical Data Backup Services programs (or whatever it’s called) out there though. I know that this software can organize everything for me and put it all into a Data Backup Services system so it will all be available when I need it . I have considered getting some sort of program for ourselves to upkeep or we can hire an online company to keep on top of it for us. I have to figure out which one is worth our while. The online company is a small monthly fee. The initial cost of the Data Backup Services software will put a dent in the company’s bank account, as well as many man hours to input the information and the upkeep of the information, but will eventually save us money . With the online company in the long run it will cost more money but it’s not a big investment and also ‘time is money’.

Yesterday was like any other day. I stopped to get coffee first. Of course there was a long line . Computer was down. Should have known. This got me to thinking about work and Emergency Backup.

There are so many clever ways of giving gifts. It used to be that you would find a box that a gift would fit in and then use wrapping paper to wrap the box, but now there are many different ideas for presenting a gift. I remember when gift bags first became available. They were very expensive and there were only a few to choose from. It did not take long before they were available in many sizes and shapes. The price for the gift bags also went down. Today at most gatherings that include gifts there is a wide assortment of gift bags.

We were invited to the birthday party of our three tear old grandson. We had bought him a puzzle with huge pieces that can be put together on the floor or outdoors. Once the puzzle is put together it is a race track for cars. The puzzle came in a sturdy square box. Because the box was so easy to wrap I bought wrapping paper and decorated the present with curing ribbons. I tied a small car that could be used on the race track into the ribbons. This looked really cute because the wrapping paper that I bought had race cars on it. When we arrived at the party I placed his present by the others that guests had brought. We visited and had dinner then cake and ice cream. After dinner it was time to open presents. All the other presents were in gift bags. When it came time to open our gift our grandson was excited about the car that was tied on the ribbon. Our daughter helped him untie this. He played with the car and then reached for the next gift bag. My daughter explained that he should see what was inside of the rest of our gift. He did not understand that you needed to rip open the paper to find your present. He tore open the paper and liked the puzzle race track that was in the box. His other grandmother and I were amazed that he had never been exposed to wrapping paper before.

I have noticed that wrapping paper is more expensive than buying the gift bags. Gift bags are more practical because they are reusable. One of the gift shops by my home has gift bags that have lines to write on that tells who the gift is to and who it was from and what date it was given. This way you can track the number on times the bag is used and who has passed it on. The owner and I were talking about the number of times we have received a gift bag back from the person that we had given it to. With wrapping paper most people do not reuse the paper and it creates quite a mess after several presents have been opened.

Some shows are even more successful when the repeats are broadcast and this is true of the situation comedy, I Dream of Jeannie. It’s original run was from 1965-1970 but the following decade saw its popularity rise when it went to syndication. The story revolved around a beautiful genie played by Barbara Eden. Larry Hagman, who would go on to iconic status as JR in Dallas, starred opposite her as astronaut Tony Nelson. Nelson has an accident resulting in an unscheduled stop on a tropical island. Finding a bottle, he opens it and releases Jeannie who has been dormant for 2,000 years. She is very grateful for her liberty and tells him that he is her master now, according to custom. He goes home to Florida with her in pursuit.

The relationship between the two stars builds slowly, developing from master and loyal genie to romance. Captain Nelson (later promoted to Major) is constantly frustrated and bewildered by the antics of his new companion and finds himself in some tricky situations. One of the hardest things is keeping her a secret from his friends and colleagues. Jeannie does her best to fit in, with hilarious consequences. He tries to shake her off but her charms work on him eventually. The combination of fantasy and love works well and they tie the knot in the final season. Further complications ensue in I Dream of Jeannie when Jeannie’s sister and mother come to call. Barbara Eden also played the sister and her own mother in the beginning.

The show was a great boost to Hagman’s career and many people forget that he is a talented comic actor. He also directed episodes on occasion. Eden was impressive too and had a big male following, not surprising, as her costumes were quite skimpy for the times. Guest appearances included Ted Cassidy, Harold Gould and Farrah Fawcett. The continuing interest in the comedy spawned numerous television specials, including I Dream of Jeannie: 5 Years Later in 1985 and I Still Dream of Jeannie in 1991. Unfortunately, Hagman could not take part in the latter due to commitments on the Dallas set. Hanna-Barbera also brought out an animated version of the show in 1973.

Fans still fondly remember the show. It is very much of its time and has great nostalgia value. It’s difficult to imagine a comedy about a genie being written today. Some episodes of I Dream of Jeannie are available on DVD and this will, no doubt, be extended to others.

I have understood from experience that finding a leak in a flat roof can be very difficult and expensive. In our home it took three different roofers, making multiple visits, to identify the point in our flat roof that a leak was coming from. The reason why pin-pointing leaks in flat roofs is difficult is that very often the point where the leak shows in the ceiling below can be quite different from the point at which the leak is occurring in the flat roof itself.

The most obvious places to look for leaks on a flat roof are flashing and joints or seals of any kind. Now, flashings are used at the point at which the roof joins non-roofing material such as brickwork. For example above our kitchen extension we have a parapet wall that is at one edge of the roof and flashing goes from the roof to the parapet wall.

It is usually difficult to test for leaks on a flat roof in the way you would on other types of roofs. It could take hours for water to trickle down to the ceiling from the moment you pour it on a suspect area on the roof.
