Have you ever thought of starting an adventure travel company but have been hesitant because it didn’t seem like a viable business? Some of you have thought of it and many of you haven’t. So allow me to reframe the question: have you ever thought of starting a business doing what you love, and have been reluctant because it didn’t seem like a viable business move? Outdoor adventure just happens to be my passion, but yours could be dancing, art, exercise, relationship, partying, or whatever. This article is about why your passion is the EXACT direction to move in, not the one to avoid, whether it’s in the wilderness guiding business or not!

I own a backpacking tour business. My business partners and I started it many years ago, and while national park tours were popular, it was a competitive market. Also, I had many objections running through my head that now seem absurd. “I will end up hating what I love because I’ll burn out on it,” “there’s no way I can actually make a great income doing what I love,” “I shouldn’t start a business when I don’t have any experience.” On and on and on…

The fact is that what ever your passion is – it’s what you LOVE TO DO. And successful people always love what they do. And let’s define what I mean by success – is success making a ton of money so you can look like the people in the magazines and movies, and feel terrible on the inside because you aren’t doing what you love? Or is success the business of absolutely loving life – of FEELING ALIVE? And making a lot of money while you’re at it? Because it’s totally possible to do both!

I feel most alive when I’m skiing, climbing, and hiking. When I’m doing these activies, there’s something that springs to life inside of me. You know that feeling when one of your favorite songs comes on the radio? When I’m in the mountains, it’s like I’m listening to all of my favorite songs for the first time all at once! What a feeling! With that sort of passion, you can’t fail – it’s impossible.

If you don’t know what you love to do, then find out! Your time is running out, as is true for all of us. Go find a dream that God made just for you, and pursue it with everything you have. I’ve proven you can truly have it all, now you just have to prove it yourself.
