The ability to trace your family tree is a great way to bring the history of your family to life. Besides interviewing the family members, and doing basic ancestry research at the local library, the internet is full of sites that can aid you in your wish to trace your family tree. And don’t think for an instant you have to rely on the sites such as Ancestry.com that charge a fee for their services; there are a number a free sites out there. Below are a few of the more popular ones used to trace your family tree.
Rootsweb - World Connect Project
Of all the free websites available for free genealogy search that can help you trace your family tree, perhaps the most popular one is that of Rootsweb. This website, which is part of the World Connect Project, allows users to upload, modify, link and display their family trees as a means to share their work with other researchers. Besides being one of the largest available on the internet, it also allows participants to update or even remove their information at any time. Granted, there is no guarantee that the information is correct, but current contact information is readily available so you can get confirmation as you trace your family tree
Heritage Quest Online
Another source for use when you trace your family tree is that of Heritage Quest Online. This database is available to subscribing institutions, and is usually available to anyone who has a valid public library card. The databases are US-centric, and include digital images of complete federal census taken from 1790 to 1930, including head of household records. In addition this resource can also help you trace your family tree by offering access to local history books and thousand of genealogical journals. If your local library doesn’t offer online access, visit your local historical society; chances are they will offer access as part of your membership.
WorldGenWeb
Finally, there is WorldGenWeb. Started in 1996, this free online database offers access to genealogical records information around the world. Simply follow the online instructions, and you’ll be well on your way to finding all the information you could want to trace your family tree.
