Labrador Retrievers: Choosing A Breeder
Anyone interested in getting a Labrador Retriever puppy should be aware that they are going to have to go through the process of finding legitimate, reputable Labrador Retriever breeders, at least if they want to find a healthy, happy puppy and one that is going to be perfectly suited to their lifestyle. When you deal with pet shops and backyard breeders, you are dealing with casual breeders who are not as educated and informed on the breed as they should be.
As a result, you will often end up with puppies with temperament or behavior problems, or even worse, dogs that have health problems that you have to deal with and which may even be permanent. You may find the process of finding a breeder intimidating at first, but by learning about what Labrador breeders you should avoid, you will be able to find a healthy, happy dog, one that is perfectly suited to your home.
Asking questions is really the only way that you will be able to determine which Labrador breeders should be avoided. Any good breeder will be expecting you to come prepared with your own set of questions and will not get frustrated by this but rather will respect the fact that you care enough to do so. They will be ready with the necessary paperwork and answers that you are looking for.
Good breeders breed dogs because they admire the breed and because they want to contribute to the betterment of that breed. Breeders that should be avoided are those who are more in it for the profit and who do not take proper care of the dogs. They evaluate their puppies as show and breeding quality and sell their puppies with a spray-neuter contract. They will guarantee their pups are free of genetic disease and usually replace the pup if the disease should ever happen to crop up.
The bottom line is that although the process of figuring out which Labrador breeders to avoid may seem intimidating and even overwhelming at first, it is one that holds great importance and significance. Choosing a dog is a huge commitment, and one that you need to take very seriously. There are many ways to locate a responsible breeder, including visiting area kennel and obedience training clubs in your area.
Using the newspaper classified ads to find a breeder is usually not the greatest idea, and so if you decide to you are really taking a gamble. There are few responsible breeders who actually advertise in local classified ads because they are so busy with people interested in buying their dogs that they have no trouble placing their dogs and therefore do not need to resort to this means. You can also speak to your veterinarian as they will be knowledgeable in this matter and be able to help advise you which breeders to avoid.
You really need to have patience when looking for Labrador breeders, and remember that word of mouth is often the best help here. There are some great dog breeding books out there that offer Labrador information and advice on finding the right breeder.
