- How Do They Work?
The Science of
3D Glasses
Most human beings have fantastic binocular vision, thanks to having two healthy, working eyes. Objects can appear up to twenty feet. 6 thru 7 meters at a distance, the binocular system of vision allows us to gauge effortlessy and precisely the distance to an object. As an example, when we see multiple objects, we are able to automatically distinguish those that are nearer from those that are farther, and how far away they are. Looking at the world with one eye closed will still allow you to perceive distance; however, your accuracy will decrease because you must rely on visual cues for focusing distances.

To see how much of a difference the binocular vision system makes, have a friend throw you a ball and try to catch it while keeping one eye closed. The differences become more obvious when tried in a darkened room or at night. If you only have one eye open, it will be much more difficult to catch a ball than if you have two open.

The binocular system of vision depends on the fact that our pair of eyes are located approximately two inches at a distance. (just over an inch) separately. The binocular vision system works since the brain is able to utilize the different perspective obtained from each eye and process them together to calculate distance. The brain possesses the capability to connect the images seen through the two eyes even if they are somewhat unlike. The correlator can pick out objects in the two scenes it sees and calculate how far apart an object is between the two images. Objects that are farther apart in the two images are closer than objects that are not so far separately.

You have seen the binocular vision system at work if you have looked through a View-Master or stereoscopic viewer. The way a View-Master works is that an image is shown to both eyes. The image is created by two different cameras photographing the same image from different angles. Your eyes can correlate these images automatically because each eye sees only one of the images.
