Families will often spend several years living in a single home and accumulating personal items over this time span. Items that people will accumulate include, but are not restricted to, furniture, toys, books, appliances and other items. The longer people reside in one location the more items they are likely to accumulate. This is very true of families with children that are a little older; there will likely be a big amount of toys, games and other items stored in the home somewhere. Each of these items present a problem when you are getting ready to relocate to another place. There will likely need to be a cleaning effort to determine what of these items needs to be kept for the actual move. Kids, for the most part, have a shorter attention span than adults and need various things to keep them interested. If you have a younger child, such as one 5 or under, be sure to have lots of toys and books, and be prepared for frequent stops. DVDs are a great idea for kids of any age, as they can view their favorite cartoon or movies on the move. This is very helpful for long moves that require a large amount of time on the road. Older kids can be entertained with portable gaming systems, DVDs, music or the mobile Internet if you have the means for access.

You can also invent family games for the move, such as counting out of state license plates, identifying landmarks, talking about favorite vehicles and more. Another key tip for long distance moves with kids is timing your stops appropriately so that the kids are fed, rested and given the chance to stretch their legs. If you follow a combination of these recommendations, the move should go a bit more smoothly for you and your family.
