One Dozen Roses – A True Classic

So Valentine’s Day is around the corner which means you should really order a nice bouquet right now and its usually one dozen roses or some other variant of flower Most people like to give this specific number of flowers – one dozen or twelve depending on what you prefer to call it. Some people may find the idea and the practice confusing. Why go for exactly one dozen roses? What is so special about that number and why won’t a number like ten or five suffice for whatever idea or message you want to convey? In fact people often do things out of habit that they don’t know the background to but when talking about buying one dozen roses, the background is simple enough but people aren’t generally aware of it.

It’s a well understood concept that flowers are about romance or affection. This has been the case for longer than we can remember, the practice of sending loving message in the shape of flowers has been going on for so long that not many of us know anything about how and when the practice started. Sure, you hear some stories but no one quite knows for sure which genius started the practice. One thing is for sure though – one dozen roses is the universally adopted way of expressing affection so we can safely go about sending our twelve red roses knowing very well that the message is going to be understood.

The idea of a dozen roses of flowers of any other variety is linked to the significance of the number. A dozen or twelve is an important number in both ancient and modern history and practices. There are twelve signs of the zodiac, twelve months in a year and a number of other important things which tend to be organized in twelves or a dozen (a crate of eggs included). It is safe to assume that one dozen roses is not associated neither with eggs nor the Zodiac, its more in tune with the twelve months of the year where the significance of one dozen roses or any other type of beautiful flower is indicative of one flower for every month of the year.

Despite the tradition, there are people who like to do things their own way, You could for example give roses in a number representing the time in months or years that you have spent with your partner, the age of the person or some other such numerical quantity that is important for the person who will receive the flowers (and the person giving them).

But to be on the safe side – go for one dozen roses. Red.
