The Technology of the Sony Playstation Eye

Recently, at the yearly Electronic Entertainment Expo conference, Sony presented what they are marketing as the Sony Playstation Eye. Sound familiar? You could be thinking back to Sony’s EyeToy, a feature utilized for the Playstation 2 that utilized the identification of the real time actions of the player. The Eye expands on this idea in certain extremely impressive ways, however they are not completely unseen ones. However, it is very difficult to predict just how much this product will actually influence the gaming community, if it will.

For any who missed the Electronic Entertainment Expo, perhaps the leading uses of Sony Playstation Eye is the motion sensing. Just how sensing is accomplished is via the following of the sensitive orb at the tips of the control designed for the Eye. Sony’s representatives proceeded to offer a live demonstration of the Playstation Eye’s capabilities, utilizing the remote to function with a 3D interface inside the TV screen and revealing just how the technology could be added to games like first-person shooters, real-time strategy, and even action. Each movement a player makes with the remote is projected onscreen with 1:1 precision.

But see, doesn’t that ring any bells? During last year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo, Nintendo did the very same thing utilizing their Wii Motion Plus peripheral. It too captures and replicates movements at 1 to 1 accuracy. The single clear difference amid the separate peripherals is that the Sony Playstation Eye demands an updated edition of their EyeToy camera to track the remotes, but Nintendo’s Wii Motion Plus attaches to to an independent sensor bar without cables. Therefore Sony’s latest attempt appears less advanced next to the year old technology of Nintendo.

Although following in the shadow of readily available features, the Eye stays an excellent offering of hardware that’s certain to excite most every fan of the PS3. Though it won’t drastically alter the realm of game playing completely, the Sony Playstation Eye does provide a lot for Sony’s credibility, and will maybe assist the developers catch up regarding innovation.
