Auto Shipping: Relocating Long Distance with Large Dogs
Dogs are a member of the family, for many dog owners. They don’t necessarily get the same status as kids, grandparents, or even cousins — but they don’t usually get treated like furniture, either. Our family was no exception to this rule. How to move from Ohio to Texas? This is something a family had to face. Having to move long distance with three large dogs.
When our car only holds seven, and there are seven people, how then were we also going to fit three, 50 to 60 pound dogs in our car? With our five children on the long trip to Texas. We knew they wouldn’t really fit in the car. We did not want to use moving services to transport them. We had to do it ourselves. We turned the situation into a game. We treated it like a long camping trip, even the kids got involved. We knew it was going to be very crowded in the car. We decided to try to make the experience fun.
We could not drive both cars since we had made car transport arrangements. When it came to auto shipping, we were having second thoughts. We were not thinking about the dogs when we made the arrangements. In the end, we decided that since the dogs think they are lapdogs anyway, the dogs would make the 10-hour trip on our laps. Even though they were too big to be considered lapdogs.
The kids had fun. They filled the back and floor with pillows and blankets. We brought toys and leashes and stopped often to let the dogs out. The result? We got to see a lot more along the way then we otherwise would have.
It was suggested by the vet to give the dogs a small dose of antihistamine. This definitely helped in keeping the dogs calm|. We had given antihistamines to the dogs before, for allergies. Some dogs are more susceptible to allergies. Some, like ours, have skin allergies. We decided to go with the vet’s recommendation and it really did the trick. We found we did not need to make as many stops. Not only were the dogs calm, but also they were sort of dried out. Both the dogs and the kids spent most of the long trip asleep.
