WIne Selection – A Beginners Guide

Wine selection is a subject regularly asked about to people within the wine industry. What wine is good? What type of wine will I like? What price should I be paying for a good bottle of wine? Are online wine sites safe?

Wine selection is a very personal choice. How would I be able to tell what’s good and what’s not? There are many ways to try wines without physically purchasing them first. Many bottle shops that stock a large range of wine will usually have one or more wines for you to try. Generally a wine company will run these types of promotions to help sell their product.

By all means, try these wines that are offered without any feeling of guilt. Most of the time, these promotional tastings are also accompanied with a sale of the product so good value can also be found.

Visiting wineries is another great way to try a variety of wines. A “tasting fee” is beginning to be introduced among wineries, but the fee is small and is generally waived if purchases are made. There are many different options to visit wineries. You can plan a trip yourself if you have knowledge of where wineries are. You can also use the internet to gather information about a particular region.

Some of the best information you can get is from the wineries themselves as they are knowledgeable about wineries in their area. Paid winery trips is also an option if you don’t know a particular region or aren’t confident planning one yourself. Many companies are available to do these trips, especially in the larger regions.

There’s two options you have if you’d like to try different wines from different wineries all from the one location. Firstly, you could join a wine club. Many wine clubs have tasting parties at different times of the year which are sometimes sponsored by wine organisations.

Online wine websites are great if you know what you are buying. Otherwise you can always read the tasting notes provided which will give you some idea of what certain wines are like. Many online wine sales sites have different wine clubs or mixed dozens which will allow you to gain knowledge of certain regions and varieties within that region.

In the end, its really up to what you want. Somebody can’t tell you what you should like, but rather what you might like.

Wine can be a great shared experience, but above all else, an enjoyable personal experience.
