Solar Powered Battery Chargers Are Now Inexpensive

Tuesday, December 22nd, 2009

We live in a capitalist society and we have a very “live for today, don’t worry about tomorrow” attitude towards our lifestyle which is demonstrated in a number of different ways. We rely upon consumer products with reckless abandonment, very rarely taking the time to even contemplate the effort or cost that was incurred in the production of the goods in question. How many of us have blithely handed over cash to pay for a particular electronic device, and not even gave a thought to the sheer effort that is required, or the resources expended in the production of the item in question? This is an issue that applies even with a Solar Powered Battery Charger.

There will be readers who will remain cynical about the role that their usage of various appliances plays in relation to the infliction of damage to the environment, especially given how innocuous and innocent they seem. Some of us will grudgingly admit and concede a small measure of culpability, acknowledging the fact that the actual manufacturing process of the appliances and electronic devices is a major source of pollution. However, the polluting effects of our devices does not end there, indeed every time we power or charge them up, is yet another slap in the face for Mother Nature. Whether it is due to electrical batteries which are non bio-degradable, or the electricity we derive from our main power supply which in turn is created using massively polluting fossil fuels: rest assured, it is taking its toll on our planet.

Electrical batteries are a nightmare to dispose of, there really is no real way to dispose of them cleanly, efficiently and above all else: safely. Cost rules supreme when it comes to disposal of these units, and so the most cost effective solution is to dump them in landfill sites and simply bury more rubbish on top of them. This would not be such a big issue if the components were actually biodegradable…but they aren’t and so unless we can wait around a century for them to finally break down, we have a real problem on our hands. We can’t burn or melt the components because that would create an unacceptably high level of pollution as well as potentially and actually lethal gases which would pose a significant risk to the personnel involved in the incineration process.

Thankfully, research has finally came to fruition and borne a remarkable new product: the solar powered battery charger. What makes this item so ideal for the current dilemma is that it is rechargeable meaning that the consumer can use the item in question for much longer periods of time which in turn reduces the need for manufacturing the chargers in the first place. This single fact in of itself means that the pollution and toxins which are an unhappy by product of the process can finally be put to rest.

To learn more about how Solar Powered Battery Chargers could not only save you money but also give you complete freedom from mains power then please visit my Solar Energy Blog.

Home Improvements: Cast Iron Gutters Show Your Money Has Been Worth It

Monday, December 21st, 2009

In a throwaway society, we are always finding items around the home that either need replacing because they don’t look as good as they used to or we are just simply bored of them and feel like updating. Even people that don’t have the necessary funds are still falling victim to their spending habits. With this in mind, it seems only logical why some people would want to better their ways and buy something that is going to last a long time and still good many years down the line. Does this sound like you? If so, then why not take a look at cast iron gutters.

We all know that living the high life comes at a price these days and that’s why many people are actually cutting back on what they spend, and how they spend it. Do you really need that new patio garden furniture? Probably not. That’s why many are realising that it is much better to save money until you need to spend it on something essential like, for example, rotten old guttering. Although guttering might be something you wouldn’t put much thought into, it is in fact an essential part of the home and therefore needs a professional touch to get it right to ensure the risk of flooding is minimised.

Cast iron gutters are the ideal choice for homeowners, primarily due to their longevity and classic, appealing aesthetics. The life expectancy of cast iron is estimated at around 100 years, which proves that this is preferred choice for those serious about their home improvements. Wouldn’t it be nice not to have to worry about flooding as much? With cast iron guttering you won’t have to. You can look at other guttering materials but you won’t find one that has a longer lifespan than that of cast iron. It will also help put your mind at ease that you don’t have to panic about flooding or suchlike because the guttering is taking care of it.

The saying “you get what you pay for” is ringing true with so many people these days that it is easy to see why they are saving their money for one good quality item rather than lots of cheap bits that will break in no time at all. Those that care about their home and its appearance are opting for cast iron gutters because they know it is the cost-effective solution in the long run. Don’t worry about having to replace your cast iron gutters in a couple of years – they will in fact continue to look good for many years.

Solar panels and grants (Canada)

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

You aren’t the only one – I too feel conscious of our environment. As a Toronto realtor, I am always keeping watch for new opportunities to make environmental-friendly living more accesible either for my clients or for whoever is interested. Today I will have a look at how the Canadian government supports solar energy.

Why solar energy?

As I mentioned before, solar energy is very . The more solar energy we produce, the less nature-unfriendly energy will have to be Earth activists, but also with many developed countries, while Canada is of course no exception.

What to do first

Without the home energy audit you will not be suitable for receiving any grants, so let’s have a look at what needs to be done.
- Don’t start any renovation or installation work on your house before the home energy auditor’s visit should you wish to receive any grants.
- You have to finish all the repairs within 18 months since the auditor’s visit.
- To make sure you get all the grants you’d like to, don’t forget to keep all the receipts and technical documentation of everything you buy for the renovations plus take photos during the process.
-Don’t forget to book your follow-up appointment, which is an important part of the Energy Audit. You will not be able to receive any grants without it.

A note about the cost: The home energy audit will cost you at least $498.75 (first visit $341.25, the second visit $157.50, inc. GST) or a little more (depends on the sq ft of your home). The government will refund you $150 towards the cost of the first evaluation visit.

So what are the grants?

The government decided to back up both photovoltaic (solar energy converted directly into electricity) and solar thermal (solar energy is used to heat water) systems. You will receive up to $500 from the federal government, but only if the system meets the CAN/CSA standards. You don’t need to hurry up yet, since the grant is available until the end of March 2011. The Ontario government decided to match the federal grant, which gives you an opportunity to receive up to $1000 for your new solar energy system. You can also ask for a refund of the 8% RST from the Ontario government.

Currently you can only claim the RST on the equipment purchased until the end of this year.

Need Assistance On Getting Away From The Yelling

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Neighbours who are noisy are a major irritant to all homeowners and in our increasingly crowded cities the problem is spiralling upwards. With more aged houses being converted into condominiums, and new-builds often suffering from flimsy walling or not very much space between houses, it’s surprisingly commonplace to hear some noise from neighbors.

When this is just the odd argument or spot of home improvements it’s quite bearable and you can consider yourself fortunate that this is all you have to put up with. Even if you have completely respectable neighbours you could still overhear parties, what they’re watching on tv, the sound of their toilet flushing or a restless infant. All these everyday noises can annoy you if you’re constantly disturbed by them. You feel like you’re being subjected to somebody else’s every day life, or that your own life is under scrutiny. Especially irritating is noise when you’re trying to sleep – this can disrupt the rest of your day and even affect your health.

So assuming your neighbours not actually doing anything untoward what can you do about it? It’s one thing to listen to their constant partying but all they’re doing is flushing the toilet and keeping you up all night!

The folks next door may be entirely innocent of the sleep you’re losing. Or they might even find *you* noisy! If there’s an easy solution, such as for them not to turn down the TV or to get rid of their alarm clock it’s worth knocking on their door and having a chat. Be friendly and make sure they know note their fault. After all, if you listen to them chances are they can hear you in return. So ask if there’s anything you can do to keep your own noise down – have you ever had the TV up late at night?

If you live in shared duplexes, talk to your landlord. Ask other habitees if they have experienced a problem too – you could get the housing sound tested to see that it complies with regulations. Of course, some landlords are more concerned than others. If your landlord has insulated as well as they have to, the onus is back on you and your own feelings about the disruption.

Sometimes soundproofing your house with acoustic installation is the easiest solution. It doesn’t have to be expensive, but it is advisable to get an an acoustic expert to look at your property up front. A professional will be able to tell you the best solution.
