Shiba Inu Dogs The Basics

Friday, June 27th, 2008

Shiba Inu dogs and Akitas have a resemblance to each other. They share height and coloring along with many other traits and characteristics. The Shiba Inu has a long history dating back more than a thousand years. This is the common trait of independence and intelligence.
This doesn’t mean they are not loyal. Actually, the reverse is true. Shiba Inu’s might possibly be a more loyal companion than other breeds. The problem is that it is difficult to earn their loyalty. It needs to be taken from the Shiba Inu with a strong hand and a firm no. While positive reinforcement works well, you still must show them who’s boss, similar to the Akita.
In contrast to the Akita, properly bred Shiba Inus are generally only between 14 to 17 inches tall at the shoulder. It will weigh approximately 23 pounds. for adults.
The Akita is another breed that originated in ancient Japan. Throughout the dog breeds in the world, the Akita is among the oldest, according to genetics. Next to the Shiba Inu dogs, which was its probable source, these are the most ancient breeds in Japan.
The colorful history of the Akita, goes back many years. Having gone through multiple wars, it was, at one point, nearing extinction. The orignal purpose for the breed was to hunt everything from deer to larger game such as Black bears. This is where they gained their fierceness.
Before the First World War they were even used by samurais in dog fights to maintain their bloodlust at a time when there was no fighting. That eventually stopped when the emperor disallowed dog fighting in Japan, to avoid cruelty to animals.
In the post-war era, many dogs, including the Akita breed, were murdered in great numbers just to manufacture coats. [spin]The remaining Akitas were bred with German Shepherds that the conquering Americans had.|The conquering Americans used their German Shepherds to breed with the remaining Akitas.
[/spin] A few pure bred Akitas survived this decade. After this decade the infatuation with Akitas was reinstated and today in Japan they are looked upon as a national monument.
There are black Akita and white Akita and according to some, the dogs bred by Akita breeders can be called stubborn and prone to unacceptable bad behavior. If their temperament is left unchecked the Akita can be aggressive and destructive at times. This stresses the importance of early training. Akita owners should begin training their pups while young. This is where a responsible Akita breeder can do wonders for their dogs. Since these dogs need a lot of care it is important they go to a loving home that can attend to the dogs needs.
A fiercely loyal breed, the Akita will protect its family and territory at any cost. Once it has bonded with his master and his family, the Akita will go up to the point of protecting you and your family once it has sensed that there is impending danger ahead, and it will protect you with his very own life.
The Akita and the Shiba Inu are equally excellent breeds. Shiba Inu and Akita breeders must be certain that the dogs will be well cared for no matter where they are adopted.

Once you have a dog as the member of your family like others it must be properly trained to behave in a perfect way under different situations.

Training is important; it is the difference between your dog being your best friend and your dog being a nuisance all the time. Training can benefit both you and your companion. It creates a good bond between you and your dog. It also keeps your dog safe and protects him from harm such as the street because he listens to you.Someof the basic commands that you will want to teach your dog first will be sit, lay down, stay, and come.
Before starting dogs or puppy training it is important the the owner or the trainer is himself in a right frame of mind. If we do this and know where we are going, we will be much less likely to violate certain training rules that may hinder or prevent us from attaining our goals. Additionally, we want to prevent ourselves from doing anything that may adversely affect the relationship we hope to develop with our puppy. The fact that everything we do in training can result in positive or negative effects on how our puppy sees us. We start out with the idea of making our dog more like we want him to be, but if we are not careful our pet may end up seeing us as something he does not want us to be.
Few tips for dog training are:

1)Always be positive when you are training. Your dog will always respond better to rewards like treats and back rubs rather than yelling at them when they do not follow your command. Instead always be patient and remain positive because you dog will learn much better and both you and your dog will have a better experience.
2)If your dog has been lying around waiting for you, let him burn off some of his energy before you take him for a walk. Throw a ball, play tug-o-war, or do something to calm him down before the walk.
3)Your dog does not know that he is supposed to be walking on your side. Spend some time using a lure. Put a little piece of food in your left hand and hold it close to your dog’s nose. Have him follow the lure; reward him every five or six feet. As he gets better, go for longer and longer periods.

Tips For Training Your Bull Mastiff Dog

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

Though massive in stature, your Mastiff is also a sensitive dog. Positive training techniques work best with Mastiffs. They will respond well to firm, consistent, kind training.

All dogs respond better to kindness.

* Give commands in quiet tones. * Be patient. Bull Mastiffs tend to develop slowly, both emotionally and physically.

* Be firm. To be firm means using a deep tone of voice that commands respect from your pet. The object of using this firm tone is to train your dog to pay attention the first time you speak.

Use specific training commands for each action, such as “sit,” “down,” or “off.” A confused pet cannot learn well what is being taught.

A helpful hint when training is to say the dog’s name first, then give the command.

*Train your Mastiff when he is alert. Mastiffs, especially, should rest after eating. Schedule your training sessions with your pet before meals. Positive training includes giving your Bull Mastiff dog treats and praise when they are obedient to a command. Treats can be handed out generously while your dog is first learning. As training continues, increase your expectations and decrease the treats so your pet will learn to obey when given a command.

Training sessions should only last about 10-15 at a time, several times a day. Your Bull Mastiff dog is capable of learning many things at a rapid pace. Start training and socializing your dog as soon as you bring him home. This time of training is a critical time for building a relationship of love and trust between you and your Bull Mastiff dog.

Bull Mastiff dogs are great pets and because they are so easy to please, they really can be trained with very little effort. You will be happier, and your dog will be happier, if your Mastiff is well trained. So, give it a try – you’ll be glad you did!

Bulldogs

Wednesday, June 25th, 2008

While theories abound about the exact origin of the French Bulldog, the most prevalent opinion is that around the mid 1800’s, Normandy lace workers from England took smaller bulldogs with them when they sought work in France. In the farming communities north of France that the lace workers settled in, the little Bulldogs became very popular as ratters and loyal family companions and their population began to swell. These little bulldogs were in fact “culls” of the established Bulldog Breeders in England, who were generally more than happy to sell these undersized examples of their breed to fanciers of the “new” breed in England. This was especially true of the “tulip” eared puppies that cropped up at times in Bulldog litters.

The name bulldog originated around 1567 and was used for numerous ancestors of modern bulldog breeds. English bulldogs were originally bred for bull baiting. Bull baiting was used as a form of entertainment in which a bulldog would try to suffocate a bull by latching onto the bull ring in it’s nose. Bull baiting was banned in 1835 and this feature of the bulldog was slowly breed out of it.

Bulldogs are extremely intolerant of heat. They must be kept in an air-conditioned area with limited trips outside when the outside temperature is over 80 degrees or the humidity is high. Close supervision is required during outside activity, especially in spring and summer to prevent over-exertion leading to over-heating. They also are not usually capable of prolonged physical activity whether the temperature is very warm or cold: a Bulldog is not for someone who enjoys taking a dog for long walks through the countryside.

Contrary to popular beliefs, bulldogs are generally docile, friendly and gregarious. Breeders have worked to breed aggression out of the breed, and as such the dog is known to be of generally good temperament. Bulldogs can be so attached to home and family that they will not venture out of the yard without a human companion. Due to their friendly nature bulldogs are known for getting along well with children, other dogs and pets.

Bad Dog Behaviour

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

Bad dog behaviour, if allowed to continue unchecked, has the potential to cause great stress to an owner. Dogs need to be well trained, and it is best to do this from a puppy. However, dogs of all ages can still be trained, so it is never too late to try and stamp out your dogs bad habits such as barking, aggressive behaviour or jumping up.Shouting or hitting your dog is not the right way to go about training, but when a dog does show bad behaviour you can’t let it go unchecked. You must reprimand the dog in some way so it knows what it’s doing is wrong. It may take time, but eventually your dog will realise it is doing something wrong and will stop. It is vital to reprimand a dog immediately though, or it will just cause confusion. For example, a friend once told me how while he was out his dog ripped up a cushion, so he punished him by locking the dog in the spare room without any toys. This is the wrong thing to do as the dog won’t remember or understand what it is being told off for, and instead will just become confused.

If you are lover of dog and you have dog, you can visit Dog Basic Training this link to know more about how you can train your dog.

Obedience training should be on the top of the list for the dog owner so the dog can learn how to behave and the owner can learn how to teach it. Obedience training is the foundation for opening up a line of communication between dog and owner. Dogs are very social animals and enjoy the company of other dogs as well as people. Teaching your dog how to behave in these situations will make the dog’s life and the owner’s life better and less stressful. When dogs are lonely and do not receive enough attention from their owners, their natural instincts to destroy your belongings, soil your house, fight other dogs, bark unnecessarily, bite, dig holes and attack other people or dogs will commence in retaliation from mistreatment (not being trained) by the owner. The key to preventing these normal canine activities is to train your dog to listen to its owner and value the owner and his or her voice as THE BOSS. Dogs should be rewarded for behaving well and obedience training should be mixed in with playtime. Having fun with your dog and performing 15 minutes of ‘sit’, ‘stay’, ‘roll over’, ‘come’, ‘heel’ etc. training can teach your dog to enjoy learning good social behavior, especially when it is rewarded with food or treats. Taking the time and accepting this responsibility to make sure your dog is well-trained at a young age will ensure a life of love and friendship between the owner and his or her dog, strangers, friends, children and other dogs.

With any training program, consistency is the key. Keeping focused and not swaying from the tasks will help you to teach your dog. Any habit, whether good or bad is formed when an action is repeated time and time again. Do not give up on any routine until your dog has understood what you are trying to teach him. Even once they understand, it’s a good idea to reinforce the habits from time to time. Just like humans, dogs forget too.

Where To Find Shar Pei Breeders

Friday, June 20th, 2008

The history of the rare Shar Pei dog breed can be traced back to the Guangdong province of China. Early forms of the breed existed as early as 200 B.C. True Chinese Shar Pei have a different appearance than the Western version. Its heavily wrinkled coat distinguishes the breed. Western versions retain more wrinkles in adulthood than the more rare Chinese versions. Both types of Shar Pei also have small ears, high-set, curled tails, deep-set eyes and blue-black tongues.

The American Kennel Club registered the Chinese Shar Pei as a breed in 1992. The name is a bit of a misnomer since the version registered is really the westernized Chinese Shar Pei. It is ironic that the breed was registered so recently since it is considered one of the fourteen most ancient dog breeds. A Shar Pei breeder in China pushed for Americans to become interested in the Shar Pei since the breed almost became extinct in the 1970s. Though only a few Shar Pei were shipped to the U.S. at that time, the breed has now gained in popularity and numbers.
Buying from a Shar Pei breeder can be easy if a buyer follows certain steps. Because Shar Pei are rare, it may be more difficult to find readily-available puppies, so a buyer should go into the process with patience. Buyers should also research the breed before buying to ensure they have the tools to raise these dogs in healthy, happy environments. It is important for buyers to know that the breed is prone to certain health problems such as entropion (eyelashes curling into the eye), severe skin infections and renal failure from too much protein build-up in the kidneys.

It is also important that buyers prepare to mesh with the temperament of the Shar Pei, which is loyal and protective but also independent. Shar Pei dogs do not take kindly to strangers and bark at new people. They can become aggressive if not trained properly. The Shar Pei’s ancestors were trained to fight and that strong spirit can be unleashed at a detriment to owners and other animals if proper discipline is not taught from birth. Buyers should research breeders and make sure the Shar Pei breeder they buy from can provide advice on raising and training Shar Pei puppies.
Reputable, experienced breeders never sell puppies to pet stores. A qualified Shar Pei breeder will screen prospective buyers because they care about all the puppies they breed. They want to be sure each and every puppy goes to a great home with loving owners giving proper care. Backyard breeders or puppy mills mass produce puppies in unhealthy conditions. The puppies produced by these places are sickly, poorly bred. Then these puppies are shipped to pet stores all over the county to be locked up in display cases with very little exercise and not properly socialized for living with a family.

Good Shar Pei breeders will form relationships with rescue centers, veterinarians, animal control and law enforcement in the neighborhoods in which they live, building networks based on a love of animals. These are the kind of breeders you want to purchase a dog from because you are bound to get a healthy, happy friend for life.

A good Shar Pei breeder will never sell to a pet store. Shar Pei breeders love and value the breed and do not treat puppies as merchandise. Shar Pei breeder locate and general Shar Pei information are provided in this article.
