Your Guide to Matters - Inositol Hexaphosphate and IP6

IP6, also known as Inositol Hexaphosphate or phytic acid, is a sugar molecule with six phosphate groups attached. IP6 is naturally present in some whole grains and is sometimes referred to as rice bran extract. IP6 has recently gained popularity as a cancer fighter. It is also thought that it may play a role in the prevention and treatment of heart disease, kidney stones and liver disease.

Iron is an important element in the growth of cancer cells because cancer cells require high levels of iron to grow; also, iron promotes the growth of cancerous cells by producing free radicals. Without going into details about chemical bonding in the body, free radicals are molecules that split, leaving that molecule with an unpaired electron. These unstable free radicals attempt to repair themselves by reacting with other compounds to regain their normal stable nature, often by attracting electrons from these other stable compounds, in turn making more free radicals as they do so. This production of free radicals is a normal process and can usually be dealt with adequately by the body’s own defences.

However, factors such as pesticides, cigarette smoke, pollution, and even advancing age, result in too many free radicals and, unless antioxidants are available from, for instance, Vitamins C and E, free radical damage may result in the deaths and mutations of millions of cells in the body leading to cancers, heart disease, liver disease, and more.

So, to get back to iron, although iron is necessary for , too much can lead to the proliferation of free radicals as the male body has no way of getting rid of excess iron. As the female body goes through a monthly cycle of menstruation, it is thought that this blood loss protects women from excess iron in the blood.

Cancer cells need large amounts of iron to continue growing, and in this way deprive the rest of the body of iron (and other nutrients). It is now thought that Inositol Hexaphosphate works in the same way as many well-known anticancer drugs such as Desferal, Adriamycin, Ferriprox, Tamoxifen, etc, by binding to iron molecules (chelating), making them unavailable to tumour cells, and thus “starving” them. There are some serious drawbacks to the commercially produced cancer drugs mentioned. Desferal is poorly absorbed into tumour cells, Adriamycin can cause very severe damage to the heart, and Ferriprox is similarly toxic to the body.

Why isn’t IP6 used more? Because none of the pharmaceutical companies will pay for the trials needed as there is little or no profit for them. For this reason, there are no trial results, safety results, effectiveness results, toxicity results, so even though this chemical is a normal part of our diet, no medical professional can officially recommend it as to do so would be by reason of commonsense, not by proven results.

Nature’s most effective iron-chelating molecule, IP6, has been shown in tests to have no effect on red blood cells (fortunately - we wouldn’t want the iron removed from the haemoglobin), it enhances the anti-cancer effects of Adriamycin and Tamoxifen, two commonly used cancer drugs, but continues to be largely ignored by mainstream medicine.

In 2001 Food and Drug Administration researchers reported that 8 out of 12 chelating agents tested caused gene mutations. Among the four non-toxic chelators was IP6.

We are lucky enough to have an almost inexhaustible supply of IP6 (made from the husks of rice grains), we are lucky enough in this internet age to be able to research compounds and chemicals ignored by mainstream medicine, and we are lucky enough to be able to treat our diseases as we see fit (though for how much longer in this Nanny State, who knows?). With many cancer treatments being said to beworse than the disease itself, why not try alternatives? They can be taken in conjunction with any traditional treatments, with no side effects.
