Bluegrass music is a form of American roots music, and it is a sub-genre of country music. It has its own roots in Irish, Scottish and English traditional music. Bluegrass was inspired by the music of immigrants from the United Kingdom and Ireland (particularly the Scots-Irish immigrants in Appalachia), as well as jazz and blues. In bluegrass, as in jazz, each instrument takes a turn playing the melody and improvising around it, while the others revert to backing; this is in contrast to old-time music, in which all instruments play the melody together or one instrument carries the lead throughout while the others provide accompaniment. Traditional bluegrass is typically based around acoustic stringed instruments, such as acoustic guitar, banjo, fiddle, and upright bass, with or without vocals.

For many people, the appeal of bluegrass music is that it is a relatively new form of music that sounds old. Most scholars agree that bluegrass first gained national attention when Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys appeared on the Grand Ole Opry in 1945. In addition to Bill Monroe himself, this legendary band consisted of Lester Flatt (guitar), Earl Scruggs (banjo), Chubby Wise (fiddle) and Cedric Rainwater (bass). The reason that bluegrass music sounds old is that it is a syntheses of many older styles of music.

Bluegrass’s second generation came to prominence in the mid- to late-1960s, although many of the second generation musicians were playing (often at young ages) in first generation bands prior to this. With the second generation came a growth in progressive bluegrass, as exemplified by second generation bands such as the New Grass Revival, Seldom Scene, The Kentucky Colonels,The Dillards. In that vein, first-generation bluegrass fiddler Vassar Clements, mandolin virtuoso David Grisman, Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia (on banjo) and Peter Rowan as lead vocalist collaborated in the band called Old and in the Way; the Garcia connection helped to expose progressive and traditional bluegrass to a rock music audience.

This occupation is somewhat like a monarchy, the son goes to work with the father and learns how to do the trade, after years and years of learning, when the father thinks it is time, the son steps up and takes the fathers position, and this is how it goes from generation to generation . So of course there was a lot of stress on me to go to work for my dad, my entire family and even my friends didn’t see how I could do anything but . No one ever really knew what to do with me back then. I guess it really isn’t their fault, they had bred so many tradesmen . They were just set in their ways and didn’t know how to handle someone as different as I turned out to be.

I couldn’t find an oven mitt so I grabbed up my cell phone holder and used that to take the pan off the oven. Since I could only fit a few fingers inside that’s all I used to grab the handle. Naturally, I dropped it and spilled scrambled eggs all over the floor. I added the mess to a list of things that I have to do . It had been way too long since I had cleaned . There’s so much dust it’s more than a coat of it. It is seriously so thick that I couldn’t even use a vacuum cleaner to get it off . My house is ridiculously messy, my clothes are piled up on my bed and I’m guessing that my oven mitt is in there with them somewhere . My bedroom is so messy that I have been sleeping in my living room on my couch for the past couple weeks . Thankfully it doesn’t smell too bad, at least not that I can notice, I’ve been using febreeze on everything that I can think of . My whole apartment reeks like Febreeze . The smell makes me nauseous already . I guess I could clean it all but I honestly have no desire to do so, instead I would rather sit around and watch television . I will probably keep putting it off until my neighbors start complaining . I think I’m going to just stay the night on a lot of my friends’ couches until they get sick of me and then I might consider cleaning my own place.

One of the most popular recording artists of all time was Elvis Presley. His recording career spanned from 1954 until his untimely and tragic death in August of 1977. Over the course of those twenty three years Presley left an indelible mark on the music industry in so many different ways. He could sing any style of music from country to rock to gospel and never did his voice fail him. From his first recording for his mother in 1954 Elvis was destined for stardom. By the time he had his contract with Sun Records sold to RCA Victor for thirty five thousand dollars in 1956, teenage girls everywhere simply could not get enough of him. His initial recording for RCA Records was Heartbreak Hotel and it soon became a number one hit. The first Elvis album released by the major record label was filled with hits and the King of Rock and Roll was well on his was to stardom. After recording many hits and making three movies for Paramount Pictures in Hollywood, Elvis was drafted into the United States Army. He spent two years in Germany while his manager continued to make sure his music was always heard back home. Upon his return to the States, Elvis starred in the movie G.I. Blues and the latest Elvis album was again rising to the top of the charts.

Although subsequent soundtrack albums did not fare as well as his early recordings, Presley still maintained an enormous fan base. After completing his contract for movies, Elvis began to record more mainstream music beginning in 1969 with the release of “From Elvis in Memphis”. This newest Elvis album was an instant hit as Presley had returned to his roots of mixing country and soul after years of generic made for movie music. It was at this time that Elvis began thinking of returning to live performing after almost a decade away from the stage. By the end of 1969 Las Vegas was calling and the King was back on top. His first live appearance since 1960 resulted in yet another top selling Elvis album, “From Memphis to Vegas”. Presley then began to relentlessly tour the United States selling out in every venue as he traveled around the country.

His final recordings were at his home studio in Graceland in October of 1976. From those sessions came his last studio album, Moody Blue, which was released just before his death in 1977. To this day some thirty years after his death, there isn’t an Elvis fan alive who can’t immediately tell you what there most memorable Elvis album is. He was that popular and that talented. His premature death left a void in the hearts of music fans worldwide.
