While it is true that taking photos is as simple as running out and grabbing a cheap five dollar camera, taking GOOD photos has never been easy. So lets explore some quick ideas that can help you take photos that you will be happy to send home.

Here are four tips to help.

1. Get a little closer, don’t be shy. One of the biggest mistakes most beginning photographers make is shooting from so far away. They leave too much distance between themselves and their subjects. Instead, get up close and personal. Fill up as much of the camera frame, with your subject, as you can. You can always reshape, trim, and resize a good quality shot. But you can’t continue to blow up a distant subject and hope that it will come into focus. It just won’t happen. Visit Shark Photos

2. This tip springs directly from #1(above)… focus your shot on only one subject. Determine what the main subject of the photo will be, and catch that image. Try and find the one key subject, person, or event that accurately portrays the feeling you are trying to capture.

3. In addition to getting one subject, in your photos, you will want to make the background of the photo as simple as possible. Busy, distracting backgrounds pull the attention away from the central theme of your photo. The subject of your photo is absolutely the most important element, and anything that detracts from the subject can ruin your shot.

4. Finally, you want to take your subject out of the exact center of the frame. You do this by using the rule of thirds. Imagine having a camera lens split into 9 equal sized boxes, 3 across and 3 down (like having a tic-tac-toe game printed right on your camera lens). Where those “tic-tac-toe” lines cross, should become the focusing point of your subject, when you are arranging to take your photo.

Based on this tip, every time you compose a shot, the main subject of your photo should be located primarily on one of these “third” lines.

Most of us have a digital camera and can record the important events in our lives with it. But there are times when it is worth paying a professional to do it right. One such occasion is when getting the portrait of a person or group. It will of course cost more than if you did it yourself. But you will be making an investment in the future by recording a reminder of the past. Such occasions mean you will want to choose a portrait photographer wisely. Below are eight principles designed to help you with this decision.

1) Location - Is the studio a convenient distance from your home? Remember that you may well have to go there at least three times. You will need to get the picture made, then perhaps have to return to select a pose, and then, of course, pick up the final product. Ask too, is the building easy to access in terms of traffic and parking?

2) Facility - A family with several children got up early on a Saturday morning to be on time for their appointment for a family portrait. But once they arrived, they learned that the studio was too small to get everyone in. Is the studio a store front or an established facility that is prepared to photograph whatever size group you have?

3) Punctuality - If you have made an appointment, are they on time? Are you allowed sufficient time to get the picture right? They will promise that the proofs and/or final prints will be done on a certain date. Are they? Perhaps you will want to check their reputation in this area with others who have gone there before you.

4) Personality - Do the employees handle themselves professionally? Are they friendly and personable? Do they treat you with the respect you deserve? How do they manage with small children and babies? Are they able to accommodate special needs people? Often portraits can be stressful times to get everyone clean and dressed and in the car on time. Smaller children will not hide their tiredness or irritation. A good photographer should be able, under most circumstances, to handle these everyday occurrences.

5) Skill - The poorest part of home photography is usually lighting. Is their lighting professional? Is the photographer skilled at arranging the scene so key people are highlighted, the picture is balanced, and everyone can be seen clearly? A skilled photographer should know how to set the scene quickly so that the picture will be attractive.

6) Choice - A good photographer will take ample pictures so that you have plenty of choices. Are the proofs ready to view immediately or will you have to return? Will they make recommendations that are in your best interest and not just their pocketbook? Are they able to present the various packages without putting you under pressure?

7) Integrity - Is the company honest? If they promised you one free picture or your unchosen proofs, do they keep that promise? Do they have the pictures ready when they promised? How would you estimate your overall experience in working with them?

Price - Professional photography may seem expensive but remember that they must pay for quality cameras, staff, and facilities. But be sure their price is competitive. Call at least three establishments, describe what you want and ask the cost before deciding.

From personal experience, getting a good family portrait can be stressful. Yet it is worth the investment. If you honor these rules in selecting a photographer, the record of your special event will indeed be an investment for a long time to come.

Underwater photography is growing every year, those who go diving wish to bring the diving world visible to those who do not dive. We have always been fascinated with the oceans and bays of the world as an unknown world. Bringing vacation pictures home to your friends or selling them as professionals has been a time honored tradition and now we can bring the underwater world home through the use of digital photography.

There are many types of underwater cameras. You have the highly expensive professional cameras and the one time slightly effective versions. Knowing which camera will work for you is very important. Part of finding the right camera may lie with in the housing you wish to purchase. Underwater photography requires you to protect your camera from the harmful affects of water so you will have to purchase housing with seals to eliminate the water. The housing you find may fit the camera you have. In fact, most companies will sell the housing for the cameras you have. If you find you, need a better camera for the underwater world you will need to look at packages. These packages will include the housing.

Photography Tips
Let us look at the 35mm cameras. Most of these cameras are just point and shoot. If they were meant for underwater chances are they have at least a mild filter to correct for the lack of color underwater. These cameras will not filter out the particles you find floating along in the water on a poor visible day. Usually they are limited to less than 100 feet. I would not use this type for anything below 80 feet. You would not want to loose pictures because the housing failed under pressure. While this is not common, it is a concern for most photographers.

The more professional cameras are larger with a huge lens to let light in as well as have filters to help bring clarity to any photograph. Typically, these cameras require you to have a deep-set hobby in underwater photography, as the expense is high. Digital cameras are the best way to take underwater photographs because you can make sure you have the desired affects before leaving the seen. Of course, most underwater life will not hang around for a second shot, but coral reefs and the animals that inhabit them may remain.

Most underwater cameras will also have a flash. It is best to take an underwater photography course before delving to far in your hobby. Sometimes the flash will help you with the photographs, but other times it will wash the subject out and ruin the print. You can also use underwater cameras when you are snorkeling. Some flashes are built in to the camera while others are external. The external flashes can be a stick with a little light bulb on top.

Good old Ansel Adams was the first HDR photographer. He captured a greater range, using a development technique called ‘pulling’ to reduce the contrast of the negative in order to preserve a greater range of information on his negatives. This was developed into what was called the Zone technique. Since his time, film curves have gotten less steep (indicating a greater range of a workable negative).

All photographers when starting out with fashion photographer this technique inevitably makes prints that are too flat or too contrasty. It is very difficult to change the dynamic range of the eye into a photograph and then to produce an (apparently) accurate dynamic range from the photo. Masters of this technique, Ansel Adams and Minor White, among a many others, produce images that vary in dynamic range greatly from what the eye sees, or what a straight print would produce, but do not appear unnatural.

That is to say, it is not ‘better’ or ‘worse’ to effect the dynamic range of a photography. However, it does reflect a mastery of the technique when this technique does not impact the viewing of the image. It is also to say that HDR simply means “high dynamic range,” where “high” can only be assumed to be used relatively. Considering the history of photography has included with it a steady increase of the dynamic range of its medium, the extension of “HDR” is constantly shifting. “True HDR” is either meaningless or requires a certain context to be defined. The same can and should be said of “True Photography.” Have any of you ever shot without a light meter? Perhaps THAT is true photography, since this how it began.

Further, we should remember (or learn for the first time) Kant. He (basically) told us that a beautiful painting is not, should not be beautiful simply because we like painting, or this painter, or this kind of painting. A photograph is not, should not, be beautiful simply because it uses HDR. It is beautiful because it excites our imagination and our understanding, puts them endlessly into play and raises our minds awareness of itself and humanity. Or something like that.

Digital cameras have captured the photographic marketplace because you no longer need to use film. This type has no need of the chemical processes that a film camera uses. With the upsurge of home computers it means that almost anyone can store and then play with the images on their own pc. Whilst the image storage may be digital, the end result looks no different from a picture printed from photographic film or high definition tv.

Many similarities exist between the two types of camera because lenses are still required to capture light just the same as a film version. The difference between the two is a conventional camera focuses its light on a film while a digital camera focuses the light onto a device that electronically records the light. A charge couple device is the light capturing device in the quality models that is used to convert light into electrical signals and as far as the user is concerned, an image is saved just like an ordinary device. The CMOS device is used in cheaper cameras and does the same work as a CCD but it is doubtful that this system will replace those devices in the quality models.

By using the CMOS sensor, many models have become more affordable for those users that do not require such a high performance device. Although the images in a digital camera end up the same, the CCD and CMOS sensors capture light differently; the causal observer would probably never notice this difference though. Shopping for one of these types of camera can be daunting but a few tips can make all the difference. Image quality is the all important factor and the higher the resolution the more you will be able to enlarge your picture; they can also provide prints that are larger without any degradation. Better photos will be taken with a digital camera that has an optical zoom and not just a digital zoom; perhaps you can remember how grainy and blurred images become when you used your camcorder’s digital zoom function?
