How Do 3D Glasses Work?

Most human beings come equipped with two eyes and an absolutely amazing binocular vision system. If the objects are not more than 20 feet away (approximately 8 yards) It is the ability to see with two eyes that enables us to measure with precision the distance to an item. To illustrate, we have the capacity to immediately determine the relative and absolute distances of any number of object that may fall within our field of vision. Looking at the world with one eye closed will still allow you to perceive distance; however, your accuracy will decrease because you must rely on visual cues for focusing distances.

Have a friend throw a ball to you while you have only one eye open, and you will see how much the binocular vision system affects your perception. The differences become more obvious when tried in a darkened room or at night. It is much harder to catch a ball with one eye open than with two eyes open.
