Monday, July 28th, 2008

McAfee VirusScan is one of the best known and market leading AntiVirus products on the market today. McAfee came to prominence with a virus-killer, but has matured to offer an all-around safeguard, including firewall protection, data security and more.

If you are looking for one of the latest AntiVirus protection software programs and you prefer McAfee as one of the oldest and most trusted providers, you should explore McAfee VirusScan Plus with Site Advisor. This includes support for virus and spyware scanning, as well as including McAfee SiteAdvisor which adds safety ratings to websites and McAfee’s personal firewall, protecting your PC from outside attacks.

McAfee VirusScan is a “best-of-breed” product and certainly a sound choice. At $39.99 for a 1 year licence it is not the cheapest, and McAfee do not offer a multi-year discount. However, if you are looking to protect multiple computers each additional licence costs only $10.00.

McAfee VirusScan is one of a suite of offerings from McAfee including McAfee Internet Security Suite and McAfee Total Protection. If you do have other McAfee products installed or are using its Internet Security suite, great strides have been made to ensure that the interface is the same throughout all the different sections.

Like all good virus scanners, McAfee VirusScan automatically downloads updated virus definitions from the Internet on a regular basis. Staying up to date will dramatically decrease any possibility that a virus will infect your computer. On average, McAfee comes out with new virus definitions on a daily basis. On the other hand, you do need to keep your licence up to date to access this service, which is an ongoing cost.

McAfee VirusScan automatically scans all incoming and outgoing mail, so you won’t need to remember to perform this task on incoming mail, and you won’t have to worry about your outgoing mail inadvertently spreading viruses to family and friends. It also automatically scans files you download from the Internet, email attachments, and files you send or receive via instant messaging software … read the full review at Computer Island: Review Of McAfee VirusScan

Which Antivirus Program?

Saturday, July 19th, 2008

The decision about which antivirus software to use is particularly problematic for home computer users, who often don’t have the technical expertise to sort the wheat from the marketing chaff. No matter which antivirus software you select, you will still need to practice “safe computing” to ensure your computer is not infected with a virus.

Sooner or later, all home computer users are confronted with the horrible question: Which Antivirus Program Should You Be Using?.

Computing professionals have usually already formed a view about which antivirus software to use in certain situations, even before those situations arise, and are less often found wandering the net, thinking to themselves, “I know I need some antivirus protection, but which antivirus protection do I need?”

If you are wondering which antivirus software is right for your situation, out of all the available makes and models, it can be difficult to find unbiased advice. Any manufacturer of antivirus software will happily tell you which antivirus program to use - theirs, of course!

While the afficionados will argue about which antivirus program does a better job of detecting malware, or which antivirus software is easier to maintain, or which antivirus software has the best update process, the bottom line for the home computer user is simple. It doesn’t so much matter which antivirus software you select in the beginning, as it matters how you deploy it.

No matter which antivirus program - or programs - you choose to run, you will need to download the updates as soon as they are released. New viruses are identified, and new fixes developed, on a daily basis. When you have decided which antivirus software you will use, bookmark their site and/or subscribe to their notification service so that you never miss an update.

Remember, too, that no antivirus program can protect you against worms and viruses that you “track in” with permission. No matter which antivirus program you are running, you must maintain “safe computing” practices - save and scan any files before opening them, and don’t download and install .exe files from the internet.

There are many good free available. If you’re paranoid run a whole bunch of them - for example the combination of AVG7.5, Zone Alarm, Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destroy, A-Squared Anti malware and Anti dialer, Spyware Blaster and Win Defender should give you belt-and-braces coverage.

Why worry about which antivirus to choose? Run them all!

Actually, as a home computer user, you don’t really need to pay for antivirus protection. Research the free antivirus software available, and choose a good set of 2-4 programs which cover all the bases between them. Look for reviews like this Norton AntiVirus Review, which cover the pluses and minuses in an even-handed manner.
