Pencil Drawing Fundamentals - The Compositional Role of Object Placement and Viewpoint Selection

In this article we will learn about some of the considerations to be made when it comes to creating a composition or selecting a particular viewpoint.

First, let us introduce a few definitions:

Eye Level - The eye level is the height of the line (eye level line) that connects your two pupils. This assumes that you stand vertically on a level surface.

Eye Level Plane - A horizontal plane drawn through the eye level line is called the eye level plane. This plane divides a scene into an upper and a lower half space. It is worth mentioning and to remember that to see objects in the upper half space you will need to look up and to see those in the lower one you will need to look down.

Horizon - The intersection of the eye level plane and a face-on vertical plane is called a horizon. An example of a close approximation of a horizon is the actual ocean horizon you see when standing on a beach. You will find that to view anything below the horizon your eyeballs need to rotate downward and to view anything above the horizon you will have to rotate your eyeballs upward.

Now, when you create a composition, you must first consider the height at which you will place the objects. This is critical because many compositions are weakened when the placement of the objects is either too high or too low relative to the horizon.

It is good practice to ask questions such as: Would my objects look better if I saw them from above? Would the composition benefit from lowering my eye level? What if the horizon were to split the objects? This last option means that a particular object is located such that part of it is above the horizon and part of it is below the horizon. That is, you see neither the top nor the bottom of the object.

The choice of placement of the objects relative to the horizon depends to a large extent on the form and the number of objects that participate in your composition.

Next to the placement of your objects relative to the horizon, your composition will also be fundamentally influence by your choice of viewpoint.

The viewpoint is determined by the location of the eye level plane and the location of your eyes on the eye level line. To help you understand the effect of the viewpoint on a composition, place a group of objects on a table and start varying your viewpoint, i.e., change the eye level plane by moving your eye level line up or down and then also by moving your eyes along the eye level line.

The idea is to study these different viewpoints, i.e., see how the composition changes when the viewpoint changes. Some of the objects will begin to intersect with others. Others will now show their top or bottom. At the same time you can also change the placement of the objects relative to each other to improve certain compositions that you found.

It is clear that both the placement of objects and the selection of a viewpoint drastically influence the composition of a scene. Your task as an artist is to change both placement and viewpoint in such a way that you end up with the composition that suits your artistic requirements the best.

It makes good sense to learn the difference. This can be done by developing your artistic sensibility for composition. One way to do this is to pay attention to composition when you study the work of great artists. In fact, the greatness of the work of some artists rests specifically on their talent for seeing good composition.

Should you play overcards or not? Many players routinely call with overcards. Assume you called the flop with K-J, you’re up against three opponents, and the flop is 8-6-3 of mixed suits. Do you call, hoping the card you take off the deck is a King or Jack — one of the six remaining cards in the deck which presumably gives you the best hand? Or are you better off folding, and waiting for a flop that fits your hand?

This is where you should know your opponents and the kind of hands they are likely to play. Then examine the texture of the flop. Is it the kind of flop which will tend to hit one or more players? Or is it so ragged that it’s unlikely any of your opponents are holding cards the flop would have paired?

Be aware of how many opponents you’re confronting. Remember, the more opponents, the more likely the flop will hit at least one of them. If you’re up against one opponent, you’ll seldom be sure whether he’s running a bluff, or the flop paired him. The decision to play or pass needs to be made with an understanding of your opponent’s playing style, an awareness of the amount of money currently in the pot, and how much you’re likely to win if you hit your hand. You should also consider your opponent’s propensity for bluffing, and the texture of the flop.

Finally, if you’re unsure what to do, err on the side of caution until you gain enough playing experience to feel comfortable in these situations.

Regardless of how promising your starting cards may have looked, if the flop doesn’t fit your hand, most of the time you’ll have to release it. The flop defines your hand.

Be aware of your opponents’ playing styles. Determine if they’re passive or aggressive, loose or tight. Categorize their play.

When you’re up against a lot of opponents, fold if the flop does not fit your hand. It probably fit someone’s hand — regardless of how ragged it might look. Let someone else call to keep him honest. Save your money for profit making opportunities.

When you flop a big hand, give your opponents an opportunity to make the second best hand, but avoid giving them a free card that could beat you.

If you flop a draw, stick with it as long as the pot odds promise a greater payoff than the odds against making your hand. When you have a hand with a multitude of possibilities, play it fast.

Be selective about the hands you plan to continue on with, but be aggressive when you have a hand that warrants it.

As you can remember as far as your high school days, you would always clown around. Some of those transformers toys were expensive, and he knew he couldn’t have every single one of them that he wanted.

A few years ago, I noticed that Transformers toys are making a comeback, but not at the point they were when my brother was first in love with them. I am not aware if they have a new television show or not, but if the Transformers toys are making a comeback, there must be some way that children are getting interested. Once a cartoon is successful, the toys will soon follow. Though I didn’t realize it when I was a kid, it seems that if you can get a cartoon made that kids will love you are almost guaranteed success in merchandise.

The smoke will naturally go towards that end and be lifted above the campfire.

If there are not enough stones to line the spot for campfire cooking, you can also use green logs but be sure to keep them watered down to prevent them from becoming dried out by the fire and bursting into flames!

Usually there is access to a metal grill to place across the fire on which to rest a pot for boiling water, frying pan and other cooking utensils. If no grate is available, steel tripods can be set over the fire to hold a pot for boiling water, making stew or any one of various single pot camp cooking recipes you can find. You can also bring along your own grill. When you are finished cooking and ready for bed, the fire must be clearly out. If built on the ground it may take more than bucket of water, but lugging two or three buckets of water can be better than finding your campsite on fire in the middle of the night.
